Cooking for Feed Me Bellarine
This week we cooked some sweet treats to deliver to Feed Me Bellarine (FMB) to put in their cafe cabinet and meal deliveries. This has been a great link into Grade 5's Community Connections this term. We loved the chats that we had about FMB and gaining insight into the students' understanding about the organisation and seeing their enthusiasm to contribute. Our kitchen occasionally gets produce from FMB when we need those additional fruits or veggies for our recipes and it was lovely to complete the cycle this week.
Some facts about FMB that we learnt this week were:
- FMB has saved 3,640 tonnes of food from going to landfill (that's the weight of 19.5 jumbo jets!!)
- FMB has cooked 1,700,000 meals to date.
What an amazing organisation!
Not only does FMB cook meals for families in our community but they also have a produce store and cafe. If you would like to check them out and support their organisation pop on down to Sinclair street in Ocean Grove's industrial estate.
Here's the three recipes that we cooked for our sweet treat delivery:
Garden News
Did you know it takes at least 100 years for a tree hollow to develop to provide a home for a native animal?
National Geographic states that habitat loss is primarily, though not always, human-caused. The clearing of land for farming, grazing, mining, drilling, and urbanization impact the 80 percent of global species who call the forest home. Approximately 15 billion trees are cut down each year. According to a study about tree density published in Nature, the number of trees worldwide has decreased by 46 percent since the start of civilization.
This fortnight, our Year 5s participated in a fabulous workshop learning about the different types of homes our animals need and then worked in teams to create beautiful emergency accomodation for our school and local community.
We will be installing habitat boxes up in trees in our school in the next month or so. We will also have a few available for local groups or families to host on their properties and help create a wildlife corridor.
A huge thank you to Miles from Wildlife Nest Boxes for your brilliant presentation and helping our students with their masterpieces.
This workshop was funded by a Junior Landcare Grant! Thank you to Mitre 10 Wallington who assited us with the paint and brushes and a massive thank you to our parent helpers! Your help is vital to the success of our program!
If you have a tree on your property and would are interested in hosting a box, please send your expression of interest to clancey.mckenzie2@education.vic.gov .au
