Year 6 News

Bunnings Workshop → Jonah & Jemima

On the 19th of October the year sixes had a Bunnings incursion. In this incursion, we started to learn about the process of germinating a plant. Jonah and I were chosen as the helpers and we got to learn how we can set up and what were the next steps. Our first task was to hand out plastic slips to students which contained all the things we needed to get started. Inside were a plastic glove, five cotton balls, a sheet with all the seeds, an information slip and a growth tracker. All these things helped us to get started on the process. After all the plastics were handed out, we listened to our instructor named Belinda. Belinda was the Bunnings person who came in to teach us. While we listened, we also had a chance to read along the information slip telling us what happens while it germinates and why we do this process. Our first step was to direct the students to the allocated water pans which they would dip the cotton balls in. After they dipped the cotton balls, we squeezed all the water out until it was just the slightest bit damp. Belinda then told us the next step, the next step was to choose out seeds to put into the damp cotton balls. The choices of seeds we had were corn, strawberries, watermelon, mint and beans. Once picked out they were put gently into the cotton balls. The balls of cotton and seeds were then stuffed carefully into each section of the gloves fingers. The last few steps were to blow air in the glove carefully, seal it then hang it up near the window.

Inquiry Projects → Elizabeth & Steph

For our inquiry project this term, we have been learning about how a lot of products that we use are not eco-friendly and we had to come up with a sustainable solution. Stephanie and I have been focusing on reducing the problem of fast fashion. We designed 4 different dresses that are inspired by problems around the world like air pollution, deforestation, water pollution and overpopulation. We chose eco-friendly fabrics to make our dresses. For the ads, we made a video, an Instagram post and a website. We are also making the clothes out of paper, modelling them on a mannequin and taking photos of it on a fake runway. We really enjoyed making our inquiry project.

Inquiry Projects - Ellena & Laura

In grade 6, we have been learning about sustainable products and clothes to make our environment more sustainable and eco-friendly. We learnt about how to make an advertisement such as videos, posters, images and more. This is to persuade consumers such as ourselves to buy products that are eco-friendly. We use all this fascinating information to create our own sustainable business where we sell and design products that are biodegradable and ecological. Some fibres that we have used in our products include fibres such as wool, cotton, nylon, polyester, pineapple leather and corn fabric. These fibres are sustainable, eco-friendly and biodegradable. In the end, we enjoyed manufacturing and designing all our products.

Transition to high school → Edwina

Recently, the grade sixes have been learning more about transitioning into high school. We have had Mrs Hunter come into each of the grade six classes, teaching us more about independence and what we are to expect and prepare for in high school. We also went onto a call with headspace on the 9th of November, which taught us how to cope with the struggles, stress and changes during our adjustment. We filled out booklets as well, with questions such as, “What are you excited about in high school?” Or, ''What to do if we were lost finding classes, or cannot remember our timetable?'' We also found out others who would be going to the same high school as us and did activities with them. It was a great help for us year sixes, and we cannot wait for the years of learning we have ahead of us!

Concert → Jasmine, Bianca, Jemima

On the 2nd of November we had the spectacular production of Star Struck, each one of us participated in special events on the night. The different groups were The CEBC dance group,  the amazing soloists, band and the wonderful dance videos your children participated in.

Jemima - I was in the band along with Nicholas, Jasmine, Edwina, Khloe, Eli and Jonah. We also had our very helpful stage hands (Tiffany H, Saylani and Sorida) to help us all the way through our performance. We felt so nervous backstage but we hyped each other up, warmed up and sang to cool us down. While on the stage it was nerve racking, we couldn't hear ourselves or the microphone but we could hear our friends yelling our names so that made us feel better. Overall we did a fantastic job and we all enjoyed this wonderful experience.

Jasmine - That night, I was a soloist. I was very nervous because everyone before me was a lot more advanced. While I was waiting, I was thinking about what everyone would think about my performance. When I was playing my pieces, I was so scared that I would make a mistake but I heard all of my friends cheering which made me feel better. There were many other fantastic instrumentalists that played that night, including Tiffany H, Saylani, Denilson, Daniel, Evie, Xavier, Ivan, Isaiah, Shaenyce, Miranda & Myself. It was a really cool experience and I had a lot of fun that night.

Bianca - I was part of the CEBC dance troupe that performed a spectacular jazz dance. Everyone was nervous while warming up but we still pulled through and did it to the best of our abilities. As we walked on we had butterflies in our stomach but by the end we felt really joyful that we got through the dance. By the end, everyone cheered for us and that made us  feel really happy. Elizabeth, Alyssa, Mia, Annabelle, Gabrielle, Michelle & myself were all proud of each other, and what we had done.

Overall we would love to do this again.
