PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Juniors

Our Junior Students during the Term have been participating in Tennis during their Physical Education Classes.  In addition they have been playing games at the start of the lessons to understand the importance of warming up their bodies.  Games also help students understand that there are rules that they must follow and strategies on how to win the game while being respectful to the opposition.  Not always the best team wins the game, that is okay if you don't.  It's what you take away from the game and continue to improve.

Tennis is part of Interschool Sport, so it gives students an understanding of what is expected.  It also assist their hand-eye co-ordination which has been a focus all year.  In Tennis students learnt different strokes, for example, forehand, backhand, volleys, smashes and serves.  The students also participated in singles and doubles matches while learning how to play with someone else and effectively working as a team to win a point.

Seniors

The Senior Students in Physical Education Classes have been performing activities that involve Fitness, Flexibility, Strength, Power, Agility and Health elements in various tests.  The students were challenged with the 12 minute run and Beep Test which not only measures their fitness but also what they do in a situation when they are tired or even exhausted and how to best adjust.  In any sport, players get tired, which then interferes with their decision making!

The students did the Sit and Reach Test which measure their Flexibility and the importance of flexibility. Throughout the year, different grade levels will learn and understand the importance of stretching and what muscles they are stretching.

The students also did the Vertical Jump (Sargent Jump), which they enjoyed.  It measures the power and strength in your legs.  It also measures if you are doing too much, because if your Vertical Jump decreases, it means that your Central Nervous System is fatigued, and that you are over exercising. A health body is important which relates to healthy mind and it assists you in your alertness while participating in Sport.

The Senior Students also did Tennis and Cricket which are both Interschool Sport activities.  In Tennis, the students were taught different strokes, such as the forehand, backhand, volleys, smashes and serves.  The students were able to play singles and doubles matches.  They enjoyed doubles because they were able to enjoy the wins with their friends but also strategies and communicate with each other.

In Cricket, the students were taught how to bat, bowl, and field placing.  The students were taught strategies on how to change a situation accordingly to the match situation.  For example, when not to run, where to throw a ball.  Strategies are important in order to make the most of the situation in favour of your team to win the game.  The importance of how to stop the ball in the field by getting your body behind the ball.  The batter keeping an eye on the ball at all times, even when you hit the ball.
