Bible verse:
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’”
Matthew 11: 28 (NLT)
As we enter the school holidays, the rhythm of life changes. The early morning alarms are silenced, the classrooms fall quiet, and a deep breath can be taken. For many of us (teachers), these holidays arrive not a moment too soon—our bodies and minds worn thin by the demands of the term.
And yet, winter is here too.
Cold winds bite at our mornings, and the days are shorter and darker. Nature slows down. Trees are bare. Even the sun seems to pause and rest a little longer beneath the horizon.
Winter is a season that teaches us about stillness. It reminds us that rest is not a luxury; it is necessary. Just as the earth takes a break in winter, so too should we. Jesus himself invites us to rest—not just physically, but spiritually. In Matthew 11: 28, He calls out to the weary and burdened and promises real rest. Not the kind of rest that comes from just sleeping in, but the soul-deep kind that restores, heals, and renews.
But winter—and holidays—also present a second invitation: generosity.
While some of us enjoy a break filled with warmth, family, and food, others experience winter as a time of greater struggle—loneliness, financial pressure, or lack of basic needs. As a Christian community, we are called to extend Christ's compassion beyond the classroom, especially when our own hands have a little more to give.
Generosity doesn’t always look like giving money. Sometimes it’s checking in on someone, sharing a meal, donating warm clothes, or volunteering a few hours. It’s using our rested hearts to pour into someone else's.
Reflection Questions:
As we enter this season of stillness, may we rest well. May our bodies be refreshed and our hearts softened. And as we’re restored, may our hands be open—to give, to love, and to bless.
Let us be people who, even in winter, carry warmth.
Prayer:Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of rest. Help us to truly receive it—not just as time off, but as time with You. Restore what is weary in us. And as we are filled again, make us generous—willing to give and serve in ways that reflect Your heart.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
