Level 5 & 6

Week 8, Term 2

🗓️ TERM 2 DATES

🌱 Friday 27th June: Sports Gala Day 2

🌱 Tuesday 1st July: Adolescent Health - Parent Information Session

🌱 Friday 4th July: Last Day of Term 2 (2:30 dismissal)

🌱 LITERACY - Reading

This week, students will be completing a range of reading assessments to demonstrate their comprehension and analytical skills. Alongside these tasks, they will occasionally revisit picture storybooks that explore themes of culture and diversity, building on their understanding of how texts reflect different perspectives and experiences. Students will also engage in reading activities that require them to make inferences, drawing on evidence within the text to answer more complex comprehension questions.

What you can do at home

Encourage your child to talk about the texts they are reading and how they are using clues in the text and illustrations to make inferences. You might like to ask questions such as, “What makes you think that?” or “How do you know?” to support their thinking. Revisiting picture storybooks that explore culture and diversity together can also spark rich conversations about your own family’s experiences, values, or traditions, helping your child make personal connections to the themes explored in class.

Writing

Students are continuing to develop their own picture storybooks that explore themes of cultural diversity, drawing on their learning about migration, identity and cultural experiences throughout the term. Using their storyboards as a guide, students will begin drafting their narratives on their iPads, focusing on conveying a clear message and exploring meaningful themes. Each story will highlight aspects of cultural diversity, expressed through both written language and illustrations. As they write and edit digitally, students will also develop their formatting skills and linking each page with the descriptors they created during the planning phase.

What you can do at home

Talk to your child about the story they are planning for their picture storybook. Ask them to explain the message they want to convey and how it connects to cultural diversity. This can help spark ideas and deepen your child’s thinking as they develop their narrative.

🌱 NUMERACY

Students are continuing to investigate the concept of probability by exploring how likely or unlikely different events are to happen. They are learning to describe these chances using everyday language such as “certain,” “likely,” “unlikely,” and “impossible,” and are beginning to match these ideas with numerical values between 0 and 1. For instance, something guaranteed to happen has a probability of 1, while something that cannot happen has a probability of 0. Through simple experiments, students are collecting data and using fractions, decimals, and percentages to represent and compare the likelihood of various outcomes.

What you can do at home

Support your child’s learning by encouraging them to complete their assigned Probability activities on Mathletics. These tasks are a great way to practise what they’ve learned in class. Talking through the questions together or asking your child to explain their thinking can help build their understanding and confidence in working with chance and probability.

🌱 CBL

This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.

Essential Question:

How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?

Guiding Questions:

- What does cultural diversity mean to us?

- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives?

- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?

- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?

This week, students will also be working on the development of their picture storybooks during CBL. These sessions will give students time to plan, write and illustrate their stories, drawing on their personal experiences, class discussions and knowledge of cultural diversity.

🌱 HOMEWORK

Students are expected to complete homework on a weekly basis. This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads. Your child's teacher will check this homework on Friday.

 🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged. This is especially important this week as students are completing a range of online assessments.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA

Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
