Chess

Over the last few weeks, the McCarthy Chess Club has played against Calrossy Anglican School and Oxley High School as well as the Catholic Primary schools.
On the 21st of May, McCarthy Chess representative players competed against Oxley High School as part of the second round of the Country Secondary Schools Regional Chess Competition. The McCarthy team played extremely well, winning the day four games to nil. This has allowed our team to progress to the next round. The day also allowed our developing players a chance to practise their skills against the Oxley social players.
Well done to the representative players of Jackson Medlock, Khang (Charlie) Nguyen, Izayah Simmons and Tobias Porter (pictured below as he wins his game to complete the 4-0 win).

In June, the McCarthy Chess players competed in a must win game in the McCarthy - Calrossy Cup. After losing the first round in Term 1, the McCarthy players needed to win to keep the three game tournament alive. In what was a series of close games, our players won the day and kept us alive for Term 3. This game saw many of our developing players make the club proud as they have shown rapid improvement. Well done to those players involved.
On the 29th May, the Year 7 and 8 players of the Chess Club took part in the Catholic Schools Week Tamworth Chess Competition, which was hosted by St Edwards Primary School. This was a fun day and a great chance for the junior players to learn more about chess and get a chance to meet players from the other schools. Hopefully, some of those players will join the McCarthy Chess Club when they start in Year 7.
The rest of this term will see the McCarthy Chess Club play in the Armidale Invitational Games, where they will be playing against NEGS and O’Connor Catholic College; travel to Gunnedah to play against St Mary’s; and host Farrer Agricultural High School.
