Year 4 - Pope Leo
In Year 4 we have been learning about Pope Leo XIV.
What is the Pope’s role?
The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church. This means he has the power to make religious decisions and guide Catholic Christians with their faith. He is the new spiritual leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics. Catholics believe the Holy Spirit helps the Pope to make decisions. This means that God guides the Pope.
How is the Pope chosen?
A group of cardinals chooses a new pope. Cardinals are religious leaders who help and support the Pope with his duties. To choose a new Pope, the 133 cardinals come together to vote in secret. This is known as a conclave. The cardinal who wins two-thirds of the vote becomes the new head of the Catholic Church. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was chosen to be the new Pope.
Who is Pope Leo?
Robert Francis Prevost was born in Chicago (United States) on 14th September 1955. He became a Priest in June 1982 and was ordained as a Bishop in 2014. In 2023, he was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in Peru. He spent ten years in Peru helping men prepare to become Priests. On 8th May 2025, he became Pope at 69 years of age. Pope Leo XIV is the 267 Pope.
When a Pope is chosen, they will choose a new name. Robert Francis Prevost chose the name Leo, meaning ‘lion’ in Latin. The last time there was a Pope called Leo was over 100 years ago. Pope Leo can speak English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese and can read Latin and German.
Pope Leo gave a speech to the crowds when he was chosen. His first words were of peace, saying “May peace be with you all”.
Our Prayer for Pope Leo
Dear God,
We thank You for gifting us with Pope Leo. Please bless him in his new role. We pray that he will lead the Catholic Church with a positive vision for the future.
Fill him with the courage to make important decisions, the strength to lead with love and the willingness to serve all people.
Please help Pope Leo to be gentle and kind and to show care for everyone, especially those in need.
Help him to share Your peace and goodness with the world.
May his teaching bring truth, clarity and light for all. Let him be guided by the Holy Spirit in all that he does.
Help us, Lord, to grow in faith and to follow his example.
Please help us to pray for him and support him in this journey. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son.
Amen.
Library
A very busy day in the library this week with each class spending time borrowing. It is sad if someone has forgotten their library bag, usually they can borrow a book to keep in the classroom until the library bag makes it in. Many of the classes have a class collection to dip into and we encourage the middle and older year levels to always have a book at school, perfect for any quiet reading opportunities!
Library Club was very busy! It really is a great spot for the students to do a spot of quiet reading and to investigate new books. The library really is coming together and I am very proud of the beautiful space we have created. I can tell that many of the students love the space as much as me!
Roald Dahl has been very popular and he has an extensive catalogue! Fancy dipping a cup in the chocolate river?? Yes! I hear you all chorus. Holly Webb's animal stories are proving popular too. I can see us with a school full of budding vets.
Happy reading!
