VET Agriculture excursion- A journey around Yeungroon….Teys Feedlot & Viv & Bec Cossar’s

Last Thursday, the VET Agriculture class visited Teys Feedlot & Viv & Bec Cossar’s property. This excursion supported their studies in a number of units of competency, including: workplace health & safety, observing & reporting on weather, biosecurity, machinery maintenance & treating plant pests, diseases & disorders.

Ash Sheahan, General Manager of Operations at Teys, spoke about the feedlot operations, prior to showing the students around the feed mill. The students then visited the animal hospital & cattle pens, & checked out the new multi-million dollar shed, which ensures increased care & wellbeing for the cattle. Everyone left Teys with increased knowledge, a new cap & a drink bottle!

The next stop was Viv & Bec Cossar’s property, where Viv shared details about their farming operations. He also schooled the students on the importance of maths! Viv’s maths lesson on the whiteboard gave the group a better understanding of the application of maths when spraying, in particular, determining chemical conversions, application rates & sprayer outputs. Once everyone’s minds were blown, the students discussed machinery, which they seemed much more comfortable with! Not ones to leave empty handed, the class departed Cossar’s with some fertiliser, which they applied to their own ‘mini crops’ when back at school.

Opportunities such as this are so beneficial & we thank Ash, the Teys staff, Viv & Bec, for taking time out of their busy day to host us. Thanks also to Tahlijia Sheahan, for organising the excursion.
