What a fantastic term we have had in Indonesian class!

Prep

Our Prep students have been learning to count up to ten in Indonesian and recognising different colours. They’ve also discovered some fascinating facts about orangutans.

Years 1 and 2

The Grade 1 and 2 students created wonderful posters all about their families, using all the new vocabulary they’ve learned this term. To show off their knowledge, they even took part in an exciting Kahoot quiz!

Years 3 and 4

The 3/4 students have been practising role-plays set at a traditional Indonesian market. They acted as buyers and sellers, learning useful language for haggling and bargaining. They even used real Indonesian items as props, which made the experience even more authentic and fun.

Year 5 and 6

Our Year 5/6 students explored dining etiquette in Indonesia and compared it to Australian customs. They also investigated the amazing variety of foods found across the different regions of Indonesia.

And don’t forget — Indonesian Day is coming up next Thursday, 3rd July. Every class will take part in a range of craft, general knowledge quizzes, games, and hands-on activities to celebrate Indonesian culture. It’s going to be a fantastic and fun-filled day!

Performing Arts

It’s been a busy and exciting fortnight in Performing Arts!

A highlight was our choir excursion to Croydon Place Community Care, where students in Years 2–6 shared their voices and brightened the day of the residents through song. The performance included group songs, trios, and solos, and was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their hard work and growing confidence in a real-world setting.

The students sang beautifully and represented Yarra Road Primary School with pride. Their dedication to rehearsals, often giving up recess and lunch breaks, really paid off.

A heartfelt thank you to our families who supported the event, particularly those who helped with transport and encouraged their children to participate. Your support made the experience possible and meaningful for everyone involved.

We’re so proud of our choir and are already looking forward to the next performance opportunity!

Physical Education

Prep

During PE sessions, our Preps have continued to work on gymnastics skills and techniques. They have been developing their balance through activities, such as independent and partner/group yoga poses, and bridge and beam balance activities. Almost all of the Preps have mastered a forward roll on the wedge mat, along with other basic rolls. They have also completed spring and landing tasks, focussing on different types of jumps and hops.

Year 1 and 2

Our Year 1 students have also been working hard on their gymnastic skills. They have been working on different types of rolls and jumps, such as pencil and forward rolls, a variety of different types of jumps, and balances. They are aiming to put together a routine to demonstrate to each other early next term. I can’t wait!

Year 3 and 4

During 3/4 PE sessions, students have been participating in games, which combine the skills they have learned over the semester. As Hooptime fast approaches in the coming term, the next lesson will be focussed around basketball skills, strategy, and sportsmanship. Hooptime trials will also commence this week so that we can start putting the teams together.

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 students have also been working on a variety of  ball games aiming to develop their ball handling skills, and attacking and defensive strategies. The Hooptime Tournament will be conducted early next term. It is an inter-school round robin basketball tournament with a variety of divisions catering for all skill levels. Trials will be conducted this week.

STEAM

Prep – Board Games, Digital Games, and Our Games Museum!

From Snakes and Ladders to Mario Kart, Prep students have been busy comparing board games from the past to digital games of today. We talked about how games bring people together and created colourful Venn diagrams to explore similarities and differences. Then, it was time to design original board games! Each student came up with their own theme, rules, and game pieces. To wrap up our unit, students proudly shared their favourite project in our very own Games Museum – a special showcase of timelines, inventions, and game creations. What a fantastic celebration of learning through play!

Year 1 - Moving Toys and Toy Technology

Year 1 students dove into how toys move and how electronic toys have transformed playtime. They explored push, pull, and wind-up toys before creating their own moving toy using everyday materials. Then we compared electronic and non-electronic toys — from Game Boys to modern tablets! Through class debates and hands-on play, students thought critically about how toys have changed and shared their own preferences with confidence.

Year 2 - Designing the Toys of Tomorrow, Inspired by the Past

Our budding toy designers took centre stage in the final weeks of the term! Students used their knowledge of historical toys to sketch and build their own toy prototypes using sustainable materials. From handmade dolls to imaginative spinning games, their creativity was on full display. The unit concluded with a special classroom “Toy Museum”, where students acted as curators, proudly presenting their toy creations to peers and reflecting on everything they had learned. It was a joyful celebration of creativity, history, and innovation in play!

Year 3/4 - Adding Detail and Storytelling

The energy in Year 3/4 continues to build as students refine their 3D models and begin writing descriptions of their chosen time periods. From horse-drawn carts and corner stores to futuristic monorails and eco-hubs, every detail has a story. A gallery walk this week allowed students to share progress and offer feedback to their peers. Their ability to reflect, adapt, and explain the changes in our community is truly impressive. We can’t wait to see the final results!

Year 5/6 - Feedback, Refinement & Presentation Prep

This fortnight focused on refining and strengthening students’ final projects. Through peer reviews and teacher check-ins, students revised their work and sharpened their presentation skills. From rehearsing in small groups to asking each other targeted feedback questions, like “Is this part clear?” or “How can I make this more engaging?”, students have shown incredible growth in both content and confidence. They're now gearing up to present their final projects to an authentic audience - we can’t wait to celebrate their hard work and learning!
