From the Acting Principal

Term 3 Week 7

Parents and Carers,

As always, our Book Week parade was a highlight of this week. The sun was shining and the stage was set. We had some of the regular book characters represented, but it was also great to see some very creative efforts.

A big thank you to the staff for embracing the spirit and representing the characters and events from one of this year's nominated books, ‘Frank's Red Hat’ by Sean Avery. Thanks to Mrs Cumming for organising the Prep students to make hats for staff.  We all looked splendid in our creative, colourful hats.  The message in the blurb reads ‘A story about never giving up on your talents, because even though what you do may not be appreciated right now, it may be in time. Possibly by someone you’d least expect.’ This not only ties in so wonderfully with our school motto of ‘We help each other to be successful,’ but also follows on from our NED presenters and our focus on building resilience.  (See book week page for more pictures and results).

The students attended a session with illustrator Sue deGennaro on Wednesday 23rd August. This was an excellent opportunity for the students  to hear from someone who is living a life dedicated to storytelling through illustrations. As she was walking down the main corridor after her sessions, she commented on the great art work we have on display and how well the students had responded during her presentations, particularly our Year 5 and 6 students. We know they demonstrate our school norm of ‘We listen to the Speaker without interrupting’ but it is always great to receive positive feedback about our students from people in the wider community.

Special thanks needs to go to Angela Vines for all her work on the book bazaar, book week poster awards, organising our wonderful speaker and coordinating the parade in the morning. I would also like to thank her for her ongoing weekly efforts in maintaining our wonderful library. It is an outstanding resource and inspiring learning space that requires plenty of continuous care and attention.

Now that book week is completed all eyes turn to Italian Day, which is fast approaching.  In fact it is just around the corner on Tuesday 29th August. As I mentioned last week, Signora Chesterman has been working with Signorina Liv and the Grade 6 students to prepare some great activities for the students. Our Year 6s will be running the activities on the day, while the other students will be rotating through each activity. Thanks to everybody for getting your pizza orders in and for those who are interested in statistics, Margherita won in a landslide. You can see more details about the day on the ‘Notizie Italiane’ page of the newsletter.

Having mentioned the Year 6s, the 5/6 camp is fast approaching. Mrs Askew has been busily working behind the scenes organising the camp and the excitement and anticipation is very evident amongst the students in the yard. As the 5/6s head off to camp, we are looking forward to hosting the students of Woodridge PreSchool for their annual get ready for school visit. The kinder students will spend two days here at OLHC, experiencing life in a school setting.

Another upcoming event is Father’s Day and as always we will be having a Father’s Day stall. This will be held on Thursday 31st August. We will also have a Father’s Day celebration and liturgy at 2.40pm in the community centre on Friday 1st September, and I extend a warm invitation to everyone. In the previous two newsletters, Mrs Bisby mentioned to parents to upload a photo of their child with their father or a significant male in their life. This could include a grandfather, uncle or friend of the family. These photos will be included in a slide show presentation as part of the Liturgy. You can find the link in the RE news section of the newsletter once again this week.

In other PFOL news, we have the School Disco on Saturday 2nd of September, followed by the Trivia night on Saturday 9th of September. I encourage all families to support both these events. If you don’t have enough numbers to create a whole table for the Trivia Night, reach out to the PFOL who can find you other like minded ‘quizsters’ to sit with. This event has always been a big night on the OLHC Social Calendar and is a great opportunity to leave the kids at home and enjoy a light hearted and slightly competitive evening.

A reminder that Liz is on leave and  heading off  to Europe for a family wedding. Angela and Lorretta will share the office duties until Liz returns next term. Please ensure any communications are sent to school@olhceltham.catholic.edu.au and not to Liz’s mobile, as the time zones in Europe are very different to here.

In sporting news, we played away at Eltham East Primary School, to compete in the weekly Inter School Sports of basketball, volleyball, finska and rounders. A special mention to our students Jonah, Harry, Daisy, Spencer and Noah who will be heading off to Division Athletics on Thursday September 7th, which is fast approaching.

I seem to be able to find a sporting highlight each week to bring up. This week I decided not to mention Brisbane's win over Collingwood, instead I looked to the world of athletics. In looking for inspiring sporting heroes for our students to admire I hope you noticed Aussie Nina Kennedy. She shared the gold medal with current Olympic Gold Medalist and World Champion,  American Katie Moon. Nina broke the Australian record twice to take the lead in the competition only to be equalled by the American. In a moment where pure sportsmanship was highlighted, Nina suggested that they agree to share the medal instead of going on and Katie agreed.

Regards,
