Curricular Arts News

Ms Christine Larsen - Curriculum Leader The Arts

As part of their current unit of work, “The Captured Image”, Year 9 Visual Art students participated in an excursion to the Brisbane Powerhouse to view the annual World Press Photography Exhibition. Representing major news events that are overlooked by the mainstream media, the 2023 World Press Photo Contest-winning works document some of the most pressing issues facing the world today. Students selected a photograph that they found to be appealing which they will be critically analysing for their current responding assessment task which focuses on photography, including portraiture and photo-journalism. For their practical folios this term, students are developing photographic artworks in a range of genres. One genre, in particular, is still-life photography. Students had the opportunity to engage in a practical workshop with guest photographer, Dr Joachim Froese who shared his knowledge and expertise on how to manufacture effective compositions in photography through lighting and the clever positioning of objects. Students were tasked with a workshop activity where they had to use a range of still-life objects to create photographic compositions which illustrated the meaning of the words: depth, big, small, order, full, and tension.

Year 11 students also participated in an excursion in Week 5 to Reverse Garbage at Woolloongabba to source materials for their upcoming resolved artwork in the unit, “Art as Code”. Reverse Garbage is Queensland's only eco arts and reusing/recycling centre specialising in the collection of clean industrial discards for repurposing and upcycling. Following this, students travelled to the Gallery of Modern Art to view the exhibitions, “Beautiful Wickedness” by contemporary Australian artist ex de Medici and  “The Favourite” an exhibition of artworks by Australian artist, Michael Zavros.
