Mr Michael Connolly, Head of Primary School
Judging by the conversations here in the Primary School over the last two days, I am sure that many boys and their families have been swept up in ‘Matilda Mania’ as our World Cup team goes further and further in this World Cup of Football. The boys are certainly full of excitement and positivity as they talk about the team’s prospects of progressing in the tournament. Some of our boys were lucky enough to be present for that incredible match against France on Saturday evening.
I hope that all boys can learn a few valuable lessons from the Matilda’s and apply these lessons to their own endeavours. The hard work that has been done in preparation for the tournament is obvious. No team can possibly perform as well as the Matildas have without enormous amounts of hard work and attention to detail prior to the competition. Hopefully, our boys can appreciate that preparation is key to success and the increased confidence that comes from success is something that they should all strive for in their academic, sporting and cultural pursuits here at Marist College.
The perseverance, grit, determination and team spirit that the team has displayed reminds us of what is achievable when we work together with those around us to achieve a goal. Whether it be teachers, friends, support staff, parents or coaches, the boys should utilise their entire support team available to them to achieve their best. Whatever happens between now and the final on August 20, we can be certain that the Matilda’s will continue to inspire and motivate the millions of proud Australians who have been on this exciting journey over the last few months.
Enjoy the extended break and I look forward to seeing all the boys back here in Week 7.
Congratulations to our Year 5 Debaters who competed in their first round of the Queensland Debating Union Competition. The boys argued the negative side of the topic, ‘That Governments Should Pay Children Pocket Money. Team 2 won their debate against Ironside State School, whilst our first team were defeated by a narrow margin against Fig Tree Pocket State School. Our competitors were as follows: Ethan Yi, Will Minahan, Sebastian Kaminski, Lincoln Bartlett, Archer Hardiker, Maxwell King, Joe Campion and Ben Mulholland. Special mention must go to Lincoln who performed admirably as the third speaker at short notice. At the end of this month, we will argue the affirmative side of the topic, ‘That We Should Develop Railways Rather Than Roads.’

Pick-up Arrangements - “Plan B”
It is important that you are aware of your son’s pick-up procedure if sports training is cancelled or if you are running late.
As soon as a decision is made to cancel a sporting fixture or training, a message is placed on the College app.
If training is cancelled boys can remain in the primary school or walk to an arranged pick-up-point when the time arrives.
Sport training sessions finish normally finish by 4:45pm. We ask that boys are picked up at this time, or soon after. Any boy who is still at their training venue at 5:00pm will be directed to the Boarding Reception area so that he may be collected from there.
In the case of bus arrivals, boys will be sent to Boarding Reception 15 minutes after the arrival time of the bus.
