On Thursday 24 August 62 students attended the athletics carnival at Bill Sewart Athletics Track in East Burwood. They took part in field and track events, including high jump, shot put, 100m and hurdles. Students displayed wonderful sportsmanship, perseverance, resilience and school spirit.

Weeden won the Most Improved school and 30 students individually achieved a place ribbon. Six of these students earned a place at the Division competition in October.

Visual Arts

In Inquiry the year 3’s and 4’s have been thinking about the special relationship between plants and insects. To accompany these studies the students have been working on an activity involving observational drawing of bees. Using reference pictures, students were encouraged to identify the different shapes that each part of a bee’s body is made up of and then use this knowledge to draw their pictures. It has been delightful to watch the students express their creativity and display their individual styles. The next step in the process will be to use oil pastels and watercolour paint to create a honeycomb background to place their bees upon.

Performing Arts

Only 12  days  now until the school production. The students are busy rehearsing their songs and dance routines and having their costumes finalised. You can purchase your tickets through Qkr!

French

  • Grade 1: We talked about why and how 'accents' are used on a lot of French words. We are also learning how to use two expressions, 'j'aime' (I like) and 'je n'aime pas' (I don't like).

  • Grade 2: We are practising two new expressions: 'Il y a' (There is) and 'Il n'y a pas' (There isn't). For revision, we are using food vocabulary learnt last year in Grade 1.
  • Grades 3 and 4: The students made beautiful posters to describe life in prehistoric times. They labelled them with their own sentences. Well done everyone for your excellent work!

STEAM

Last week we celebrated book week in STEAM! The preps, 1s, and 2s made fizzing green eggs after we read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss. While the 4s, 5s and 6s made fireworks in a jar after listening to a couple of pages from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling.
