The Academy debating teams competed in the final round of the DAV Debating Competition on Monday 31 July. All six teams performed brilliantly within their divisions. Students worked collaboratively with their peers to develop their debating skills and confidence throughout the debating season. They are to be commended for commitment to the Debating Program.
The A and B grade teams were challenged by the secret topics throughout the competition. These secret topics required students to prepare their speeches in one hour without any access to devices. The students performed exceptionally well in these high pressure conditions. The A grade team lost only one debate across the five rounds and finished equal second on the ladder. The B grade team finished in equal fourth place on the ladder.
Our two C grade teams also only lost one debate throughout the competition. Both Academy teams finished equal second on the ladder out of the twenty six C Grade debating teams competing in the Essendon region this year. A special congratulations to Florencia Herrera who was recognised by DAV for her excellent performances and invited to the DAV Winter Debate Camp over the July school holidays.
The D grade debaters celebrated the end of their first debating competition. They have shown exceptional growth this year. One Year 9 debating team finished equal fourth on the ladder. The other team were narrowly defeated by Lowther Hall in the final round of debating, leaving them equal second on the ladder. An excellent effort by all students!
Congratulations to the students who were involved in this year’s Debating Program.

On Friday 11 August, six students from our debating team facilitated a workshop for the Grade 6 students at St Joseph’s School in Brunswick West. The students shared their knowledge of how to successfully plan and write debates. They also demonstrated a debate for their audience. This group of Year 9 and 10 students assisted the students to prepare for an upcoming Junior School Debating Competition.
Well done to Alice Portz, Cara Egry, Anna Boult, Elise Dabbs, Lucy Ryan and Sarah Newhouse for their involvement in this workshop.

It was that time again when we were lucky enough to have Paul Dillon come to the Academy to speak to the Year 10, 11 and 12 students about drugs and alcohol. Students were provided with knowledge, great tips and stories that provide them with the information to make informed decisions when they are out with their friends. Paul will be back again next year to speak to the students.
