Grade 5 - 6

Yarning and Welcome Circles

This is something exciting that we have added into our daily routines at Grayling. Each Monday we start our Yarning Circle with the Acknowledgement of Country and a discussion around an Indigenous word. Then the other days we have Welcome Circles that are a fun and exciting way to get to know each other, with each student sharing something about themselves related to the topic of the day.

The grade ⅚ cohort created their own ‘Talking Sticks’ for each class, an activity they completed last week was to think of a word that was important to them and write it down in a sentence to share with the class why that word was special to them. Each student had their word written onto the ‘Talking Stick’ to have a connection to the circles that was personal to them.

Literacy

We have commenced poetry in both Reading and Writing. The students have been looking at the structure of poetry. We have been studying the poem “I’m Talking Big” written by Colin McNaughton, at the end of the week they began to publish their poems based on “I’m Talking Big”.

Maths

We have been working on fractions and time, the students have continued to use quick maths games at the commencement of each session to build on their fluency with multiplication. During our look at time, students took to the yard to time themselves completing different tasks and work out how long it took them.
