Grade 1

Reading:

In Grade 1, our students have been on a reading adventure, focusing on two important skills: text-to-text connections and identifying the main idea.

Text-to-text connections have shown them how stories can relate. By recognizing similarities in characters, themes, and experiences across different tales, students have gained a deeper appreciation for the richness of storytelling. Understanding the main idea has been another key focus. This skill helps them uncover the heart of a story – its core message. Through targeted activities, they've learned to extract essential details, enhancing their comprehension abilities.

As we applaud our Grade 1 students' progress, we invite families to join in. By nurturing a love for reading at home and discussing stories, we can continue fostering their curiosity and comprehension.

Writing:

The Grade 1’s have continued to enjoy writing Narratives this fortnight. We have learned all about the structure of a Narrative, where students have been using picture prompts to create a story about each structural element; orientation, problem, solution and ending. Students have also been experimenting with sizzling starts, conjunctions and punctuation such as commas and exclamation marks to elevate their writing. It has been great to see students using their imagination and creativity to produce some really interesting and exciting Narratives!

Maths:

Students revisited the features of an analogue clock. Exploring ‘time’, the Grade 1’s have been learning how to tell time to the hour as well as half-hour. Students compared these various times on their very own self-made clocks. Students further revised language such as “o’clock”, “Half past”, “Quarter to” and “Quarter past”. Using these terms, students were able to verbalise and tell the time. In addition to this, students were exposed to corresponding digital times.

Integrated:

In Integrated, students have explored different family structures and the role of family groups today. They created a picture of their family before identifying the similarities and differences between their family and another student’s family.
