Prep
Reading
This fortnight in Reading we have been focusing on the comprehension strategies Predicting and Searching for Information. Predicting is using clues from the front cover to make a smart guess about what you think the book is going to be about. Students practiced Predicting using books such as The Good Egg, Wombat Stew, and Room on the Broom. Students also practiced Searching for Information including who the characters were, what the characters were doing in the story, and where the characters were in the story.
Writing
This week we have started learning about Procedural Texts!
Students have enjoyed following step by step instructions and learning how to successfully plant a seed. They have then used their understanding to write their own procedural texts of “How to plant a seed”, by writing a title, listing the materials needed, sequencing the photos in order and writing step by step instructions. Check out their great work!
Maths
Last week in Maths we finished our measurement unit focusing on capacity. Our Preppies made use of mathematical terms ‘holds more than’ and ‘less than’ to compare the capacity of different sized containers. Students informally measured their capacity by counting how many pom poms, blocks and counters they hold.
This week our focus has shifted to Subtraction. Students have been making use of newly learnt mathematical words ‘take away’ and ‘is’ to answer and create subtraction sentences.
These sentences were made with collections of blocks and other hands-on materials that the students could easily take away. Students were able to subtract from collections of 10 to determine the answers to subtraction equations. With partners, they also created their own subtraction equations, by rolling dice and flipping over number cards to determine amounts they could subtract from 10 or 20.
Check out our mini mathematicians in action below!
Integrated
This fortnight the students have enjoyed exploring ways to solve small conflicts with each other by using a peace path. They have considered different strategies, spoken about how they are feeling and come up with solutions that everyone is happy with to allow them to continue playing together. It has been great watching them solve small issues independently and wanting to take initiative for their own problems.
We have also had the opportunity to participate in a soccer clinic run by Football Australia. The prep students have learned the technique of kicking, dribbling, shooting and passing a soccer ball, all while running around with gigantic smiles on their faces. Watch out Matildas, the Grayling kids are coming.
