Girls in STEM

This week as part of our Enrichment programs, Mr Stockton began taking a class for a select group of Year 5 girls to support girls in developing a strong interest and confidence in STEM.

These sessions will focus on designing and creating a robotic solution to meet a need. The program will encourage creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and hands-on exploration as students work through a design challenge and build a functional robotic prototype.

We are excited to provide this opportunity for students to extend their learning in STEM and engage with meaningful, practical applications of technology and engineering.

Assessment Week

Next week is our Assessment week.  Each class teacher is released for a day to conduct 1:1 assessments with the students in their class in both literacy and numeracy.

These assessments help monitor student progress and help us to identify both gaps and strengths in student learning. They form a valuable part of our term giving teacher time to work closely with each student.

Policies

The School Council plays a vital role in reviewing policies that support a safe, inclusive, and high-quality learning environment for all students in line with Victorian Department of Education guidelines. Through ongoing consultation with staff, parents, carers, and students, the School Council ensures that school policies reflect the needs and values of our community while supporting student learning and wellbeing.

Families are encouraged to stay informed about school policies via our school website.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books.

Every student at Wheelers Hill Primary is registered for the Challenge. Your child’s class teacher will provide you with their username and password. To enter books and view the booklists visit: https://vprc.eduweb.vic.gov.au/home

What does my child need to read to complete the challenge?

For Prep to Year 2 students: Children can read books by themselves or with someone else, for example, a parent, teacher, sibling, buddy or friend. You can help your child or read the book to them if they are just learning to read.

Your child’s Challenge books can come from the list for their year level or a level higher.

Prep - Year 2 students are to read or ‘experience’ 30 books (at least 20 of these from the Challenge list).

Year 3 - 6 students are to read 15 books (at least 10 of these from the Challenge list).

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier.

For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Please note that dates on this website have not yet been updated but all other information is still correct for this year

There are thousands of books on the list. You are welcome to visit the school library, the local library or to re-read books you have at home!

HAPPY READING!

ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools)

Once again Wheelers Hill Primary School will be participating in the ICAS Assessments this year.

ICAS is designed to target students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition. Every student will receive a certificate and an online result report.

The assessments are suitable for students wishing to extend themselves academically and take up the personal challenge of competing in an international assessment.

ICAS Assessments are an online test. This allows greater accessibility for students and faster delivery of results.

Learn more about ICAS here: https://www.icasassessments.com/products-icas/subjects/

Participation in ICAS testing is optional.

Wheelers Hill Primary School allocates the offering of the tests available based on our ability to manage the online nature of the tests and ensure we are able to provide devices.

Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you are unsure if your child should participate.
