Acting Assistant Principal Report

Year 7 and 8/Support

by Brooke Douglas

Welcome back to Term Two. We hope all families enjoyed a restful break and the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends.

We certainly hit the ground running, with our Year 7 students heading straight to camp in Grantville for the first three days of term. Our newest students embraced the challenge of stepping outside their comfort zones, building new friendships and taking measured risks through activities such as the high ropes course and giant swing.

Perhaps the most rewarding experience was spending a night away from the everyday comforts we often take for granted, helping students develop resilience, independence and stronger connections with their peers.

Please see the report below from our Year 7 Year Level Leader, Emily Payne:

Year 7 Camp:

Year 7 camp was a great success, and we were blessed with phenomenal weather for our three-day adventure at Grantville. It was wonderful to watch the students forging new connections through teamwork activities such as low ropes, raft building and team initiatives, and supporting each other to face their fears on activities such as high ropes, the giant swing and mountain bike riding.

Students got to experience a campout, many for the first time, and this reminded all of us of the need to get outside our comfort zones regularly.

Overall, it was a wonderful trip, and we would like to thank all staff who attended,  making it such a great experience for our students.

Our Year 8 students have returned to term with enthusiasm and have settled back into their classes and Tutor Groups extremely well. As the year progresses, we are encouraging students to continue developing positive habits, strong organisation and consistent learning routines to support their success throughout the year.

Our recent Parent-Teacher Interviews provided a valuable opportunity for students and families to connect with subject teachers, celebrate progress and discuss areas for growth. We hope these conversations have helped students set meaningful learning goals both at school and at home.

A reminder that we continue to offer two free after-school educational support programs for students:

  • Every Tuesday afternoon(3:15pm-4pm): JUMP Maths Tutoring Program in the JLC, facilitated by our Mathematics teachers

  • Every Thursday afternoon (3:15pm – 4:30pm): Homework Hub, providing free tutoring and learning support for students in Years 7–12. This tutoring is run by two of our high-performing alumni students.

Our students lead increasingly busy lives and, for many, these sessions provide valuable time to complete important schoolwork before heading home, helping to ease the demands of the evening. We strongly encourage both students and families to take advantage of these opportunities during the junior years, as developing positive study habits and effective routines early is such an important foundation for future success.
