Year 9 Camp
Our Year 9 students are currently on their annual camp and I had the privilege of joining both groups for part of their time away. Camp was a fantastic opportunity for the cohort to step away from the classroom and lean into the challenges and triumphs of the great outdoors. From the moment the buses pulled away, the focus was on building connections, testing limits, and—most importantly—having a brilliant time.
One of the absolute highlights of the week was the African drumming workshop. The campsite was transformed by the powerful, synchronized rhythms as students learned to play as a single ensemble. It wasn't just about making noise (though they certainly did that!); it was a masterclass in listening and collaboration. Watching the group find their groove and cheer each other on during solo riffs was a testament to the vibrant spirit of this year level.
When they weren't creating music, students were busy conquering a variety of outdoor activities. Whether they were navigating challenging terrain, working through team-building initiatives, or testing their nerves on the ropes courses, it was wonderful to see students stepping outside their comfort zones and offering words of encouragement to peers.
Homework
Navigating the demands of secondary school coursework is a journey that doesn't have to be taken alone. To ensure every student has the tools and environment needed to excel, several dedicated support initiatives are available throughout the week.
Every Tuesday, students seeking extra clarity or a boost in their mathematical confidence can attend JUMP/SMASH. These sessions are specifically designed to provide specialised maths assistance, allowing students to work through complex problems or clarify classroom concepts with teacher support.
On Thursdays, the Homework Hub opens its doors to students across all year levels and subject areas. This program offers a unique peer-mentoring experience, as it is hosted by former students. These alumni bring a wealth of recent academic experience and study strategies, helping current students tackle everything from essay drafting to scientific inquiries.
Creating a consistent study routine is key to academic growth, and all students are encouraged to take advantage of these free supports to reach their full potential.
Both JUMP/SMAHS and the Homework Hub are held in the Junior Learning Centre (JLC). Sessions run until 4:30 PM, providing a quiet, focused space for students to complete their tasks before heading home.
Year 10 Exam Preparation
As the Year 10 exam period approaches, additional support will be provided to help students manage their revision effectively. In the weeks leading up to exams, dedicated exam preparation sessions will be hosted after school.
These sessions offer a structured environment for students to stay behind and focus on their revision notes and practice papers. To keep energy levels high during these study blocks, snacks will be provided. Further details regarding specific dates for these sessions will be shared via the school compass shortly.
Year 10 Exams
Students will start their exam period on Monday 1st June.
All examinations are scheduled to take place in the Senior Centre unless a different location is specifically noted for a particular subject. To ensure a smooth and punctual start, students are required to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the commencement of their exam and should assemble in the Senior Centre courtyard. Please keep in mind that full school uniform must be worn for all sessions.
Students are responsible for arriving with all the necessary equipment required, including pens, dictionaries, and calculators. Because requirements can vary between subjects, students must check with their class teachers beforehand to confirm exactly which items are permitted for each specific examination.
Once students have entered the exam room, a strict environment of silence is enforced. Communication with any other student — verbal or non-verbal — is strictly prohibited. Every examination begins with a designated reading time. To maintain the integrity of the testing environment and avoid disruptions, all students are required to stay for the full duration of their examination.
Year 10 Subject changes
The window for adjusting Semester 2 subject selections is officially open during Weeks 5 and 6 of this term. Finalising these adjustments now ensures a smooth transition and ensures that all students are correctly enrolled and prepared for the rollover to Semester 2 units immediately following the exam period.
To initiate a change, students must visit Mr. Petersen to collect the required paperwork. This documentation must be completed and returned within the designated two-week timeframe to be processed for the upcoming semester.
Early planning helps ensure that every student is placed in the classes that best support their learning goals and pathways for the remainder of the year.
Save the Date: Once Upon a Crime
Mark your calendars for a night of mystery, mayhem, and fractured fairytales! Our talented Year 9 Drama students are thrilled to announce their upcoming production of Once Upon a Crime. After a term of intense rehearsals, the cast is ready to bring this fun caper to life. Please add Thursday 11 June to your calendar.
