Careers
Hello Parents/Guardians and Community Members,
Welcome back to the new school year for 2024! This year will be a very busy year in the Careers office. With TAFE courses, School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships, Work Experience for Year 10 this term as well as a White Card course later in Term 1 (TBC) and guest speakers and excursions to Charles Sturt University Explore Day and many more. See below for details of each event coming up this term.
UOW Discovery Day Excursion Scheduled for 15th & 16th February Cancelled!
Due to many of the students who had expressed interest last term in this excursion, pulling out this week due to other commitments, I have had to make the difficult decision to cancel this excursion due to lack of numbers attending. All students in Year 11 will have the opportunity to attend in 2025!
YEAR 10 Work Experience – Week 11 Term 1 – 8th April – 12th April!
Please note that Year 10 Work Experience week has been brought forward to the last week this term 8th April – 12th April!
This decision was made in consultation with employers and industry stakeholders as well as a review of the Careers Program at Narrandera High School, we have elected to bring the Year 10 work experience week forward from the previous scheduled week that used to be at the end of term 2.
The main reason for these change in dates was due to the extra strain on employers later in term 2 when the end of financial year was on which added an extra burden to employers and their staff. Also, in bringing work experience forward, students will have more understanding of their interest areas to undertake senior subject selections which are always at the end of term 2.
TAFE YES Program – Construction Commencing on 16th February – 12th April 2024 (Every Friday in Term 1).
We have our TAFE YES programs continuing again this term at Narrandera TAFE, with students participating in the popular Construction course. Students have been provided with the TAFE Forms and a school note will be sent electronically to those interested students in the next week.
All students are to make their own way to and from TAFE on the scheduled days (Fridays) and are required to wear full work gear and steel cap boots. A note will explain all the requirements of this course and will be sent out in the coming week.
As always, these amazing courses are due to the tireless work and advocacy for our students by Fee Smith of Narrandera TAFE, so a huge thank to Fee!
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT’s):
This term we have a huge jump in the number of senior students who have signed up to undertake SBAT’s with host employers. Students in years 10, 11 and 12 can undertake school-based apprenticeships and traineeships and work and obtain specific qualifications in an industry as part of their senior students. Any parents, students or employers who wish to obtain more information about SBAT’s are encouraged to call the careers office for more information.

Upcoming Events:
CSU Explore Day 19th March 2024:
Later this term CSU will hold their annual Explore Day. This is a fantastic day for students to immerse themselves into interactive workshops and to explore and try out University courses and see what university life is like. More details on this excursion will be coming in the next few weeks.
White Card Courses: TBC – Later in Term 1
I am hoping to have a confirmed date soon for the next White Card course to be run at some point this term. All students wishing to undertake White Card training are encouraged to see me to have their name put on the list. Due to the rules of SafeWork we can only host 20 students in each course. I cannot guarantee when the next course will be after this one so, students are encouraged to not miss this opportunity.
The course is completely subsidised by the Department of Education and so there is no cost for the course itself. However, the SafeWork Card does have a cost of $28.50 for each student.
*All students will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier Number to participate. I can assist students to obtain this online but will require them to bring in a photo of their Medicare card to obtain this USI. Or students can obtain this themselves by accessing the following website:

All Careers Events:
All these opportunities are always announced to students at our morning assemblies, year meetings and in our newsletters. Any student or parent who has any questions in relation to these activities are welcome to contact the careers office for further information.
