ACTING PRINCIPAL REPORT

Dear BSC Families,

As we begin our new academic year and I continue in my role as Acting Principal, I would like to acknowledge the privilege and gratitude I have for being asked to lead our wonderful students, and community during this time of change.

Welcome!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to students, staff, and families who have joined us this year. We are thrilled to have you on board and look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. It was a joy to meet so many year 7 parents, carers and grandparents at our Y7 coffee morning as we debriefed about the first day of secondary school.

To our returning students, welcome back. It has been an absolute joy to see your smiling faces once again. To our Year 12 students, you have a big year ahead of you, and it feels as though it was only yesterday when we watched you walk through the gates as Year 7 students at Brighton Secondary College. We are here to support you in your final year and I am confident that together, we will make this year an exceptional one.

Building a Culture of Inclusion and Upstander Behaviour

We are committed to fostering a positive and inclusive atmosphere where every student feels safe, valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. Our dedicated teachers have been working to develop engaging and innovative teaching strategies that cater to the diverse needs of our students.  Last Monday all staff were involved in the ‘Courage to Care’ Teaching Training, to continue to create a school culture of ‘Upstander’ behaviour, to empower students and staff to make a real difference in our community by standing up and taking action. Thank you to Mike Zervos (CEO of Courage to Care) and Zoi Juvris and their team for running the teacher training, it was thought provoking and engaging.

Teacher Appointments

I would like to thank our students and families for your patience whilst we find the very best teachers to fill outstanding teaching roles. We acknowledge it has not been an ideal start to the year despite our leadership team actively recruiting all summer. We continue to pursue all avenues to seek the very best teachers to join our team. In the interim, we are doing all we can to ensure consistency in the classroom. I am pleased to announce that we have appointed three wonderful new teachers this week in the areas of PE, Math and Humanities and expect to make further appointments in coming days.

VCE 2023 High Achievers Morning Tea.

We were thrilled to welcome back our 2023 ‘high achieving’ Year 12 students and their families who joined us for morning tea. We then celebrated and acknowledge each student at our whole school assembly. Thank you to the students and their families who attended, we love having past students return, and look forward to hearing about your future adventures and successes.

Parent, Carer, Community Participation | Brighton Secondary Community Connect (BSCCC)

I encourage all members of our school community to actively participate in the various events and opportunities that will be available throughout the year. Whether it's joining our parent community group the BSCCC, attending a parent-teacher conference, volunteering your time, expertise or contributing financially, all engagement plays a role in creating a vibrant community and enhanced learning environment for students.

Student Voice

After the very successful and fun ice-cream appreciation day, run by the BSCCC late last year, students now understand they have another avenue to seek support for events, causes and other activities they are undertaking.

The first student led event for the year is The Worlds Greatest Shave, to raise money for the Leukemia Foundation. This year students will extend an invitation to parents, not only to help with the haircuts but also to participate in the shave if they are up to the challenge! This project is being run by Vitia and Gracie, 2 of our incredible IBDP Y12 students. Let’s get behind them and help make this a successful and memorable day.
