From the Classroom
News from 5/6
Throughout the second half of Term 3, the unit will be reading Once as our class novel. Once is set in Poland during World War 2. It is told through the eyes of 10-year-old Felix, who is living through the Holocaust. Soon after he leaves the orphanage, Felix rescues an orphaned girl, Zelda, and brings her along on his journey. Once focuses on the theme of hope, innocence vs ignorance, family and human dignity.
Students will read articles on the same subject with differing opinions and explore why one article is more more persuasive than the other. Students will investigate the different literary tools and devices authors use to engage and sway their audience.
In Maths, students have been creating graphs on Excel spreadsheet, investigating Prime, Composite, Cubed, Square and Triangular numbers as well as developing their financial managements skills within a budget and answering worded problems on the four operations.
Next week on Wednesday 28 August, the 5/6 unit will be going to ScienceWorks. While at ScienceWorks, students will sit in the planetarium and watch “Where’s the Water?” Students will investigate whether there is the existence of water on all the planets in the Solar System. As we explore each planet for water, we will also examine each planet’s particulars and where they are positioned in relation to Earth.
