Reading & Tricky Words

For Year 1 in particular, please practice using the Super Six Reading Comprehension strategies at home when reading each night! As your child progresses through their levelled readers, we want to make sure they are comprehending what they are reading. Here is an explanation of each comprehension strategies along with some examples of questions you could ask.

Once your child has mastered a list of tricky words, please encourage them to practice spelling them as well! This will help students apply their knowledge into their daily writing.

Please remember to continue to read your home readers and tricky words each night!

Maths

Kindergarten are continuing to learn about addition until the end of Week 5. Please continue to practice these skills at home.

  • playing adding board games such as Snakes and Ladders
  • using everyday materials to model addition. For example, start with 5 spoons from the cutlery drawer, now add 4 more spoons. How many are there altogether?
  • Encourage your child to help you when out shopping by counting and collecting objects to put into the basket, e.g. ‘Can you get 2 apples? (add more) How many do we have altogether?’
  • When playing with building bricks or small toys, encourage your child to count how many of each colour or size.
  • Play simple board games and encourage your child to count the spots shown on the dice and the number of spaces to move.
  • Sing number-themed ......... counting rhymes and use your fingers or small props to help count the items, e.g. 10 Green Bottles.
  • Watch Number Blocks with your child and discuss the concepts. Each episode has been carefully crafted with the help of the NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) and it helps children to see how numbers really work − and master a new key math skill with every adventure.

Year 1 are continuing to learn about 2D Spatial Structure until the end of Week 5 – focusing on measuring and comparing areas using informal unit in rows and columns. Please check in with your child to check their understanding of this unit & reach out if you are wanting any ideas to work on at home!

Science

In Science last week, we explored a variety of different instruments. We had a great discussion of how these instruments make music, and the action that we do to make that sound. For an example, strumming, plucking, hitting, tapping, etc.
