Learning Questions

As part of the learning culture at St Joseph’s, we ask students about their learning throughout the day. This deliberate pause during the learning process allows learners to reflect on what they are learning and next steps in their learning.

We all know the typical answer when we ask our kids what they learned at school today!

By asking more direct and explicit questions the answers could be more reflective about what has happened throughout the day with their learning.

  1. What did you learn today in (maths, english, religion etc)?
  2. How did you go with your learning?
  3. What did you do if you didn’t understand?
  4. How can you improve your learning?
  5. What are you most proud of with your learning today?

These questions create an opportunity for a more informative learning discussion with your child/ren.

MAST Professional Learning

Last week Amy Phillips and Maria Wilson attended MAST professional learning. We were able to showcase some of the wonderful work that we are achieving here at St Joseph’s in Mathematics and enjoyed seeing what other schools are doing in the Diocese with a gallery walk.

The focus of the 2 days was formative assessment, which is assessment that provides evidence about learning and progress to inform the next steps in learning. We also learned more about descriptive feedback to improve learning. Yesterday in our Professional Learning meeting we discussed the learning with the rest of the staff and are looking forward to implementing this into the learning environment for our learners to enjoy.
