Book Week 2024 at Trafalgar Primary School: A Magical Celebration of Reading

This year’s Book Week theme, "Reading is Magic," truly brought the wonder and excitement of books to life at Trafalgar Primary School. From August 17th to August 23rd, students and staff alike embraced the magic of reading with enthusiasm and creativity.

The week was filled with a variety of activities that celebrated the joy of books and reading. Our costume parade was a highlight, with students and staff dressing up as their favourite characters, from superheroes, wizards and animals, and everything in between. The magical theme inspired a fantastic array of costumes, and it was wonderful to see the creativity and effort everyone put into their outfits.

In addition to the parade, our classrooms were buzzing with book-related activities. Students explored the magical worlds created by their favourite authors.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and made this Book Week a truly magical experience. Let's keep the magic of reading alive all year round!

Lions Club Public Speaking

This week Havana Brown and Aleena Khan competed in the second round of Lion's Club speaking against the champions from neighbouring schools in our local Lion's district.

All the students spoke incredibly well in front of family friends, Lions Club members and the independent panel of judges.

At the conclusion of the competition, Aleena Khan was announced as the winner at Grade 5.  Aleena will now progress to the next round of the competition to be held on the 13th October.

Mid Term 3 Music Update

Festival on the lawn

In the coming weeks students will be turning their attention in music classes to Festival on the lawn.   Festival on the lawn is our Term 4, huge community celebration of all things performing and visual arts. Each class, grades 1-6, will be preparing a song of their choice and performing it on the big stage as a class band. Foundation students will perform folk dances and a song with movement on the grass in front of the stage.

The date for Festival on the lawn is Friday 6th December after school. Please keep the date free as students are expected to attend.

I look forward to providing some more updates as the event draws closer.

Choir

Our choir is rolling along well. With our first performance done at the MND fundraiser outside assembly, our focus now moves to the Trafalgar Community Carols.

The Trafalgar Community Carols are on 7PM Wednesday 4th December and the TPS choir will be performing 3 songs at it.

The choir meets second half of lunch on Thursdays. No experience is needed, and it costs nothing. More regular attendees are always welcome.

If you are interested in your child being part of this event, I am sending forms home and you can contact me via email ricky.allan2@education.vic.gov.au to ensure your child is part of the choir performing at the Trafalgar Community Carols.

I will require an email confirmation from a parent or guardian in order to lock in the final choir attendees for the event.

PE/Sport Update

Victorian Schools Downball Tournament

Our Grade 3-4 and Grade 5-6 Downball champions recently showcased their talents at the Victorian Schools Downball Tournament, which took place on Tuesday, August 13th, at Maroondah Nets in Heathmont. Downball, also known as handball or four-square, is a popular game in many Australian schools, and our Grade 3-6 students have been honing their skills during Sport and Physical Education lessons throughout Term 3.

Our Grade 3-4 team had an impressive run, winning 3 out of 5 games and securing 8th place in the state. Meanwhile, our Grade 5-6 team also put in a strong performance, winning 3 out of 5 games and finishing 7th in the state. Both teams displayed excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination throughout the tournament, making our school extremely proud.

Congratulations to all our players for their hard work and dedication, and a big thank you to all the parents who attended and supported our students at the event. Well done, Trafalgar Primary!

Netball Victoria School Championships

The Netball Victoria School Championships is one of the largest netball tournaments in Australia, attracting school teams from across the state. This year, Trafalgar Primary School proudly entered three teams into the Gippsland Regional Finals: a Grade 6 Girls team, a Grade 5 Girls team, and an all Boys team.

Our teams performed admirably throughout the tournament, facing strong competition with determination and skill. Although we did not advance to the next stage, the effort and sportsmanship displayed by our players were exceptional.

A major highlight of the day was the thrilling matchup between our all Boys team and Grade 5 Girls team, which ended in an exciting draw. Another memorable moment was a mid-tournament friendly match where the Grade 6 Girls team emerged victorious over the all Boys team.

Congratulations to all our players for their outstanding performances, and a special thank you to Mel McIntosh for volunteering her time to help coach and umpire some of our teams throughout the tournament. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved!

Olympian Belinda Snell Inspires Students at Trafalgar Primary

On Wednesday, August 7th, Trafalgar Primary School had the incredible opportunity to host former Olympian and Australian Opals basketball legend, Belinda Snell. Her visit was a highlight for our Grade 3-6 students, who were thrilled to meet such an accomplished athlete.

Belinda, a local from Mirboo North, has had a remarkable basketball career, representing and captaining Australia on the world stage. Among her many achievements, she has won two Olympic silver medals (2004 & 2008), a bronze medal (2012), and multiple gold medals at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships. However, perhaps the biggest highlight of her career was her unforgettable half-court three-point shot at the 2012 London Olympics.

During her visit, Belinda engaged in a lively Q&A session with our students, sharing her experiences as an Olympian and offering insights into her journey from a young player to an international star. She also brought along her Olympic medals, which added to the excitement and inspired many of our students to dream big.

The visit was an inspiring experience for everyone involved, and we are incredibly grateful to Belinda Snell for taking the time to share her story with us. It was a day that our students will remember for years to come!

Friday 6 September

Friday 13 September

We look forward to seeing our students make a splash and build their confidence in the water over the coming weeks!

Mill Valley Ranch Camp Wrap Up

The best activity on camp was … the horses because you get to ride them and brush them.

A challenge for me on camp was getting to sleep because it was so noisy and super cold.

One thing I learnt about myself on camp was that I can get super scared trying new things.

One funny thing that happened on camp was when my shoe got stuck in the mud and my foot slid out of my shoe and got muddy.

I would suggest to the camp people to block off the muddy bits of grass and mud.

The best activity on camp was horse riding because I liked how it was bumpy and when I went up a ramp it felt weird.

A challenge for me on camp was the great race because it was really hard to find stuff! But we did find stuff.

One thing I learnt about me on camp is that I can sleep for a long time!

This is one funny thing that has happened to me at camp. I tried to do a kick in tight pants and fell in the mud!

My suggestion is to have more trampolines.

Indonesian Cultural Day

On Friday the 16th of August, Trafalgar Primary School hosted Baguskan for our annual Indonesian Cultural Day.  It was a fantastic day celebrating different aspects of Indonesia’s rich and vibrant culture!

Students in Years 3-6 participated in workshops run by Aaron and Nina, learning about Indonesian gamelan (percussion orchestra) and traditional dance. Students in Foundation-Year 2 watched a Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet) performance and participated in becak rides around the school yard!

At the end of the day, all students who participated in workshops had an opportunity to perform either dance or gamelan in front of their peers, in a final performance retelling a traditional Indonesian cultural story.

Terima kasih banyak, Aaron and Nita for all your hard work in running such a fantastic event for our school!!

Uniform

We have an astounding amount of unnamed uniform and student items in lost property.

Daryl does a sweep of the yard daily after school and collects all lost property, more often than not, these are not named so do not make it back to their owners.

Please take care to name all uniform items and anything that your child brings to school.

Thank you for your cooperation.
