Snowy River School for Student Leadership Opportunity

Each year Bairnsdale Secondary College has an opportunity to apply for Year 9 students to attend a leadership program through the Snowy River School for Student Leadership.

Selected students attend a term-long course, in which they develop their skills in leadership, community involvement and team-building exercises. This year our College has successfully applied for 6 positions (3 boys and 3 girls) in the program for Term 1 2025, which will be located in Marlo.

Our current Year 8 students will have an opportunity to apply for a place in the School for Student Leadership program for 2025, with the hope of completing the program whilst they are in Year 9.

An expression of interest form can be collected from the 8 or 9 Hub from Megan or Amy. Expressions of interest must be submitted no later than Week 9, Thursday 12th of September.

Once expressions of interest have been received a selection process will proceed. This will include:

  • An interview with the selection team (consisting of the College Principal, an Assistant Principal and members from the hub team)
  • An information session will be conducted with participating students and families once the application process is complete.

More about the Program

The School for Student Leadership is a Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) initiative offering a unique residential education experience for Year 9 students. The curriculum focuses on personal development and team learning projects sourced from students' home regions.  There are 3 campuses in iconic locations across Victoria. The Snowy River Campus is located near the mouth of the Snowy River at Marlo in East Gippsland.

During their stay, students live and work with up to 44 of their peers from other schools around Victoria. They are presented with challenges and lessons designed to build tolerance, teamwork and leadership.

More information about the Snowy River School Campus, can be accessed at Snowy River Campus - School for Student Leadership, Marlo, Victoria.

Please note: An expression of interest is not an assurance of a place in this program. There are currently 6 available places for our college community in 2025. There is a cost of approximately $900 associated with this program that will not be covered by the college. These are outlined in detail in the program documentation. The program is run by the School for Leadership. Bairnsdale Secondary College is a liaison school for enrolled students participating in the program.

The Respect Competition

Open date: August 1st, 2024

Closing date: September 15th, 2024

Being respectful to classmates, friends and to the people around us is important. But what does respect mean to you? We want students across Australia in years 4–9 to show us what respect looks like in your world. Download the storyboard template and use drawings and words to create your story—don’t forget to include the word ‘respect’.
