Highlighting 7P

A new term for Mr Mac and a new term for 7P!

As with most new classes, we rolled out with the basics:

  • Rule number 1 - If you bring food into my class then I automatically get half (that soon deterred them)
  • Rule 2 - Always find a student in the class with more technology experience than yourself and
  • Rule 3 - Patience is a virtue!

Our work together this term has not always been about the academic, but also inclusive of the relationships that we build. We get to know each other through our stories, both inspiring and sometimes thought provoking.  Each student learns how to develop their own narrative. They are taught to be inquisitive, to query what they do not understand and most importantly, to ‘have a go’.

Our first unit of work together was to explore the themes and characters in the text, ‘Paper Planes’. We enjoyed this very much, particularly the competitive part (my paper plane won the race!!). We are currently creating ‘mockumentaries’, to showcase the wit and wisdom of each student (watch out Hollywood) and how to be both professional presenters, whilst embodying satire and creativity to make a point. Our class, like all classes, is a mixture of personalities, each complementing and challenging each other. Our goal is to ‘reach higher’, and be prepared to step outside the comfort zone.

Maths

7P have worked so hard to build and consolidate their maths knowledge this year. They have demonstrated amazing problem solving and teamwork skills when working with number problems and the food trucks. They have taken a change of teacher in their stride and are demonstrating all the school values. This term 7P have been introduced to algebra and they've taken to it with open and accepting minds. They can now group like-terms, expand and simplify algebraic expressions, and balance equations. They are noticing algebra everywhere in their day - at the canteen, in science, and even with footy scores. 7P are a fantastic group of students who are inquisitive in their learning and come to all maths lessons prepared to do their best and trust the process.

Health and PE

This term we have been learning about puberty in Health and invasion games in PE. So far we've done a unit on ultimate frisbee and basketball.

Science

This week 7P did another fun Science experiment called: 'Colour Density Tower Procedure'. Students added food colouring and different amounts of sugar to water. They boiled the water using a Bunsen burner to dissolve the sugar. Students then slowly placed the water into a measuring cylinder starting with the cup containing the most dissolved sugar. This caused the solution to separate and caused the less dense solution to float on top of the denser solution, creating a beautiful rainbow.

Art

In Art 7P are finishing their animal portraits focusing on the art element tone and the art principle balance. Some students have started planning for their clay sculptures, and some have also had the opportunity to assist in the painting of the mural for the Year 8 Hub!

The Respect Competition

Open date: August 1st, 2024

Closing date: September 15th, 2024

Being respectful to classmates, friends and to the people around us is important. But what does respect mean to you? We want students across Australia in years 4–9 to show us what respect looks like in your world. Download the storyboard template and use drawings and words to create your story—don’t forget to include the word ‘respect’.
