How long have you worked at BSC?

This is my second year. Fun fact: My wife went here when it was Beaumaris High, and my mother-in-law was the canteen lady, way back. My connection to the school is quite long.

What is your role at the school?

Learning Area Coordinator of English and Communicate and Relate, and a Senior English teacher.

When you were little, what did you aspire to be?

I wanted to be an astronaut. I saw the people landing on the moon when I was not even in primary school yet—who didn’t want to go to the moon? Then I found out how small the capsule was.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Hugh Jackman.

Do you collect anything?

When I was little, I collected stamps, but I don’t anymore. Now, I collect books. My wife says the house is creaking under the weight of books.

What’s your favourite book?

It does vary. The honest answer is Lord of the Rings because of when and where I read it, but that’s more of a childhood favourite kind of thing. I really like Station 11; it’s about a pandemic that wipes out the world, and that just feels like a nice thing to relax to. All the Light We Cannot See is a very good book. The didn’t nail it with the TV show though.

Do you have a message for students you may teach in the coming years?

Read the English book.

What has been a highlight of your time at BSC?

Not to put any pressure on you guys, but I was really excited and impressed by how last year’s Year 12s finished and how they embraced the whole thing and surprised us with their maturity.

What animal would you like to be for a day?

My dog has a pretty good life.

Do you follow sport/AFL?

AFL, St Kilda, and cricket. I played cricket for Beauy.

What is your favourite movie/TV?

I was 12 years old when Star Wars came out. My friend and I went to see it when it first opened, and it was a trip to the city by ourselves by train. We got to watch this film, and we literally lined back up at the end of the film and watched it again.

What was the last book you read?

Stasiland. I missed it when it was on the Year 12 list a few years ago. It’s about a woman from Melbourne who went to Germany and interviewed people about what it was like living under East German rule. So it has all these true stories. Not recommending it, but it was interesting.

Thanks, Mr Cian!
