GRAND FINAL FIXTURES

This week, we had the privilege of welcoming four-time Olympian and basketball medallist Laura Hodges to our assembly. Laura, who represented the Australian Opals in four Olympic games, winning silver medals in 2024 and 2008 and a bronze in 2012, shared her experiences as a professional basketball player. Our students were inspired by her speech and were excited to hold her Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals.

Our Knockout teams continue to compete in the Statewide Competition representing Loreto well. Student Achievements:

Congratulations & best of luck to our Loreto girls competing in the U13 Club Soccer Cup Finals. This knockout competition started in March with 40 club teams, and on Sunday 4th August Loreto students featured in three of the last four teams competing in the semi-finals. Clara Luppino, Amelia Viscariello, Alexandra Holland, Beatrice Mezzini, Indigo Lee, Eloise Correll, and Amelia Orken played in close, tense matches. Both games decided by just 1 goal, with Alexandra, Beatrice, Indigo, Eloise and Amelia celebrating a win and progressing to the cup final. Congratulations girls and best of luck for the final.

We also congratulate Phoebe Rohrig (Year 7) and her team (Morialta Netball Club) who competed in the SAUCNA Junior Netball Carnival and won their division, undefeated in all 6 games. It is wonderful to see so many of our students enjoying their sport and experiencing these successes.

Catholic Schools Cross Country

Well done to all the students who participated in the Cross Country Carnival in the east parklands last week.

A few runners were participating in their first ever race of this kind and acquitted themselves well. With 100 to 150 runners in each race, our results across the board were excellent and you should be very proud of your efforts. We also had a couple of students soldier on through illness – it takes more than a cold to keep those competitive instincts down!

We had Top 25 finishes from

  • Summer Squire, 3rd in Year 3 Div C
  • Harriet Eblen, 5th in Year 3 Div B
  • Olivia Saber, 5th in Year 3 Div A
  • Alessia Haddad, 17th in Year 3 Div A
  • Colette Cheng, 10th in Year 4 Div C
  • Imogen Fluder, 24th in Year 4 Div C
  • Amelia Lampit, 5th in Year 4 Div B
  • Amelia Olive, 22nd in Year 4 Div A
  • Jamie Sheridan, 6th in Year 5 Div C
  • Zali Karp, 5th in Year 5 Div C
  • Sophie D’Amato, 7th in Year 5 Div A
  • Bella Lynch, 21st in Year 5 Div A
  • Juliet Searle, 12th in Year 6 Div A

A shout out to poor Emily who had a nasty fall during her race but bounced up like a champ and ran in the Cross Country Relay Event in the afternoon. Emily could have easily asked to sit it out but was determined to represent the school and help her teammates. It is fantastic to see that sort of resilience and school pride in our students.

It was heartening to see all of our girls flock to the finish line each race to cheer on their schoolmates. Seeing you support each other and show genuine excitement for the achievements of others reflects very well on you as people.

I hope you had fun and that you are looking forward to representing the school again in future events.

Cross Country Team Relay

Well done to Hazel Gavenlock, Ella Shepherd, Minny Winters and Sophie D’Amato who came 2nd in the SAAS Cross Country Relay event at Waite Oval.

Never Give Up

Well done to coach Megan and our Year 5 Blue netball team who were down a few players due to illness and found themselves 5-10 behind at half time. A strong third quarter saw us reduce the deficit to 4 goals before a final quarter blitz saw the team winners by one!

Well done also to Year 3 Helen Cheng who filled in for our Year 6 White team on Saturday. Helen was there watching sister Colette play on an adjacent court but couldn’t suit up quickly enough when the opportunity to play popped up. Despite giving away a bit of size, Helen was widely regarded as “best on court” in a feisty display.

First Win!

Well done to our Year 5 Gold AFLW team who picked up their first win of the term on Tuesday, by 3 points over Seymour. We were 3 goals down at quarter time but stepped up our tackling in the second quarter and took over the game. Charlotte and Paloma dominated the midfield, Zali, Sibella and Maria were impassable in defence, Evie and Georgia were dangerous up forward, Isabelle acquitted herself well in ruck and Sophie set up play well from behind the ball and even pushed forward to pinch a couple of goals.

Our Year 6 Blue team also had a win on the neighbouring field in a strong afternoon from the Loreto teams.

Final Basketball Game

Our Year 5/6 basketball team finished their winter season with a 26-10 win over St Anthony’s. Thank you to our coach Caitlin for all your hard work at training and games and also to Kate who assisted with transport to and from the boarding house each week.

Soccer

Our Year 3 Blue soccer team played St Peters Girls last Friday who were short of players. It was great to see our players volunteer to fill in for the opposition so that the game could go ahead and both schools could field full teams. The more time we can get on the pitch for each player the better.

I received this note from the St Peters Girls’ sports coordinator afterwards:

“We just wanted to say thank you to the Loreto girls and coach last week for lending us players for our soccer match. As always, the game was played in great spirit, and I know that sometimes kids can be reluctant to join another school, but the Loreto girls were fantastic. Our girls are very grateful.”

AFLW Goal Record?

In 2018, Western Bulldogs’ forward Brooke Lochland kicked 7 goals in a game against Carlton. It set the record for the most goals kicked by a player at AFLW level in a single match and is a record that stands to this day.

Last Tuesday afternoon, our own Evie Harrison kicked 7 goals in a brilliant display against Walford.

Year 4 Evie was promoted to the Year 5/6 competition this term after a string of dominant performances for our Year 3/4 team in Term 2. Playing out of a forward pocket, she led strongly, evaded tackles, won the ball at ground level and finished clinically. Our midfield of Paloma, Maria, Zali and Isabelle worked together to move the ball forward and Evie capped off their good work. It was great to see the teamwork on display and several of our scoring chains started from deep in defense.

The match itself was a thriller and played in great spirits. The lead changed several times with Walford running out winners by 4 points. Well done to the Loreto Gold team on an excellent game and congratulations to Evie on your goal haul!

Did Evie break the school record? A question for Ms Braddock and Ms Dew!

Sporting Achievements

Well done to Chloe Zhang and Isabella Mignone whose team won first prize at the CASA Calisthenics Competition 2024 last Saturday. Well done also to Estelle Samuel whose team won the pennant at the Cheer Competition on the same day.

Welcome back Mia Frearson-Lea who returns from representing South Australia in the State 12 and under football championships in Geelong.

One of our Year 3 netballers Olivia Girolamo got to meet the premiership winning Adelaide Thunderbirds players during the week!

The ELC to Year 11 Art Exhibition

This week, the Square was transformed by a vibrant exhibition of artworks highlighting the diverse artistic approaches of our early learners to young adults.

Drawing inspiration from various texts, students across different year levels created unique and imaginative responses. ELC children’s artworks inspired by "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "Bowerbird Blues," displayed their keen observational skills. Year 1 students explored the theme of patterns and their role in understanding the world through imaginative responses to "The Princess and the Pea." Year 3 students aligned their work with the SEAD program aims when creating decorative illustrations of Wilbur the pig from "Charlotte’s Web." Year 9 students incorporated collage and assemblage techniques in their interpretations of beliefs and narratives associated with the Holy House of Loreto, demonstrating refined artistic processes and aesthetic judgement.

Reception students developed artworks centred around the theme of what they appreciate most about their time in reception, expressing their experiences and joys. Year 8 students crafted personal story paintings that communicated with symbolism. This process was enhanced by class discussions that explored the diversity of Aboriginal visual art practices and underscored the importance of culturally respectful approaches to Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property rights.

The student artwork responses to Easter from Year 2 and Reception classes were creatively linked to the themes and events of Easter. Year 2 students focused on Holy Week Crosses, using masking tape and oil crayon to depict the sunrise and the Resurrection of Jesus. Reception students created artworks inspired by the Last Supper, drawing from Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting. Both classes used art as a medium to engage with and reflect on the Easter narrative, enhancing their comprehension of the holiday's religious significance.

The emphasis on art elements was apparent across different year levels. Preschoolers participated in observational drawing and exploration through self-portraits, carefully examining their features in a mirror to represent their unique facial characteristics, hair, and skin tone. The Gumnut children's fine motor skill development was enhanced as they utilised leaves and sticks as tools for painting and printing techniques. Year 4 students expressed their creativity through line doodles, while Year 7 students refined their skills in observational drawing, focusing on tone and colour.

Research into issues and artists’ practice underpinned the learning of several year levels. Year 5 students explored the challenges of asylum seekers. They expressed their own sense of freedom utilising skills in textiles and sewing, collaborating to create a meaningful patchwork piece. Year 6 students’ research on a migrant’s experience was applied to designing and printing a 3 D symbol in Tinkercad. Year 10 students’ research process fostered the development of critical thinking and creative insight. Concepts were translated into reality, resulting in highly resolved artworks that engaged with the complexities of our contemporary world and reflected the students' understanding of social issues. Year 11 students explored the Vanitas still life genre to address current personal experiences and global issues. The Vanitas tradition was used as a lens to examine and comment on the transient nature of life and the pressing issues of today's world.

The progression from early learners to senior students in art education demonstrates a transition from exploration and foundational expression to the development of technical skills, conceptual understanding, and critical engagement. We congratulate all exhibiting artists for contributing their diverse voices and visions to this celebration of their growth and passion for visual art expression.

ABODA Band and Orchestra Festival

The Music Department is very proud to be sharing a wonderful result achieved at the 2024 annual ABODA Band and Orchestra Festival held at Westminster school during Week 4.

On Wednesday 14 August, it was the first time our Senior Concert Band has participated in the festival in a number of years. They were awarded a BRONZE trophy for an enthusiastic and musical performance. It was a tough section to compete in with 17 entrants from South Australian schools and the set piece for this division was incredibly difficult. The Bronze award was very well deserved, especially by the four Year 6 students who joined the Senior Concert Band only this term, working hard in the lead up to their performance.

We now look forward to the Annual Senior Music Night on Tuesday 17 September, where the Senior Concert Band will be performing along with all the music ensembles and vocal groups from the Senior School. Admission to this event is free, but tickets must be booked to ensure availability.

Balaklava Music Eisteddfod

An eventful day was had at the Balaklava Music Eisteddfod on Saturday 3rd August, with Loreto Students Mia Luppino (Yr 9), Gracie Cheung (Yr 8) and Clara Luppino (Yr 7) entering a number of sections.

Sisters Mia and Clara entered 5 sections and 2 sections respectively, whilst Gracie entered the Intermediate Musical Theatre Solo section, making for quite a busy day.

In singing, Mia placed first in Intermediate Vocal Solo Classical and third in Intermediate Contemporary Vocal Solo against some very stiff competition. Within the vocal division, she was additionally awarded the overall Vocal Solo Champion Roger Manuel Memorial Prize. This came as a surprise and topped off the day - it is a very special accolade, adjudicated by London-based opera singer Nicholas Lester.

In the instrumental sections, Clara placed 2nd in Intermediate Instrumental Solo  (playing flute) and Mia placed 1st in Senior Instrumental Solo (also playing flute). The girls also performed a flute duet in the Junior Instrumental ensemble and won first place. Gracie entered the Intermediate Musical Theatre Solo and came 1st place.

All girls put a great deal of time and effort into mastering their performance pieces in the lead up and we are very proud of them.

Rotary Youth Music Awards

Last Saturday evening, two Loreto students Sadie Marks (3G) and Florence Fuller (6B) competed in the annual Rotary Youth Music Awards hosted by the Rotary Club of Unley in conjunction with the Tabor Institute of Music. The girls performed incredibly well, with confidence and excellent stage presence. Both girls were entered into the Primary Age Cover Song category. Sadie was the awarded First Place, and Florence came Second Place. Both girls received lovely prizes for their efforts too.

Sonia Mascione (Year 10) will travel to Sydney as part of a Dance Team performing at an International Dance Competition (World Supremacy Hip Hop Battlegrounds) in September. Good luck, Sonia!
