The “R” in ERIC: Respect is the foundation of healthy Relationships
Respect is not just about manners—it is about recognising the value in others and in yourself. For teens, learning to show respect in friendships, at school, online and at home builds trust, confidence and better relationships. It is also key to setting and respecting boundaries, speaking up respectfully, and listening even when they disagree. Respectful teens are more likely to become respectful adults and that makes for safer, more connected communities.
Parents can nurture respect by modelling it in everyday life: speaking kindly even when frustrated, listening without interrupting, and treating all people (including teens!) with dignity. Remind your teen that respect doesn’t mean agreement—it means curiosity, compassion and accountability. It’s a quiet strength that never goes out of style.
“We don’t have to agree on everything, but we do need to treat each other with respect.” —Unknown
