Teaching & Learning

As Term 3 came to an end, the Epping Secondary College community celebrated a busy and exciting few weeks filled with learning, creativity, and teamwork. Students and staff took part in a variety of activities — from classroom projects and sports to community events — that highlighted achievements, built skills, and set the stage for a fantastic start to Term 4.

A major highlight was Book Week 2025, celebrated with the national theme “Book an Adventure!”. The library became the hub of action, and the College came alive with colour, energy and imagination as students and staff embraced the idea of stepping into new worlds through reading. Book Week is not only a celebration of imagination but also a reminder of the academic importance of reading in developing key literacy skills.

Reading strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and writing fluency — skills that underpin success across every subject area. At Epping Secondary College, reading is a cornerstone of our literacy priorities. Our well-resourced library offers a rich collection of fiction and non-fiction materials that cater to a range of interests and reading levels. During English classes, students visit the library regularly for dedicated reading sessions, giving them time to explore new authors, genres, and ideas while building confidence and comprehension.

We are proud to highlight the incredible efforts of our Year 12 VM students, who organised a major fundraiser at the end of Term 3 in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. On Tuesday, 9th September, our Year 12 VM and VPC students hosted the Second Annual Fundraiser, a cross-curriculum initiative that showcased collaboration across the VM/VPC programs while meeting aspects of the Unit 4 Module and Outcome requirements. From Term 2, students were challenged to take ownership of the event, contributing to its planning, execution, and overall success.

This initiative provided students with a valuable opportunity to apply their learning in authentic contexts. In Numeracy, they applied budgeting skills to estimate costs accurately. In Work Related Skills, students drew on workplace communication, collaboration, and OH&S knowledge to ensure the event was safe, well-organised, and effective. Through Literacy, students researched the charity, advocated for the cause, and promoted awareness to staff and peers, linking directly to the Personal Development Skills unit, Promoting a Healthy Life. The fundraiser not only raised awareness for a worthy cause but also allowed students to leave a meaningful legacy and showcase the vibrancy of the VM and VPC programs to the wider school community. Activities included serving pizza and coffee, providing mini nail services through VET Beauty and Community electives, hosting an all-year-level soccer match at lunchtime, and offering fun activities such as video games and a pie throw during Period 5—ensuring a memorable day for all involved. Thanks to the students’ dedication and hard work, the event raised $1,400 in donations, making a tangible difference while celebrating creativity, leadership, and community spirit.

As Term 4 began, students returned on Tuesday 7 October following a productive Curriculum Day. Learning momentum picked up quickly, with student teams representing the College at Sustainathon 2025 at Whittlesea Tech School, designing eco-friendly products from recycled materials.

Meanwhile, Year 7s collaborated with the Greenbrook Community House to create Halloween props — another great example of students connecting with their local community through creativity and service.

Academic engagement also extended beyond the College, as Epping Secondary welcomed Grade 6 students from local feeder primary schools for PAT (Progressive Achievement Test) sessions in literacy and numeracy. This initiative helps teachers better understand students’ learning profiles ahead of Year 7 transition and provides valuable insights to support a smooth, confident start to secondary school.
