Year Four

Dear Families,
What a wonderful few weeks it has been in Year Four! The students have been working hard across all areas of learning and continue to impress us with their enthusiasm and growth. We are especially proud of the way each child presented their work during the three-way conferences. It was a joy to watch them confidently share their achievements, reflect on their progress, and set goals for what’s next. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate their learning with us , your support truly helps them shine.
Writing
In Writing, we are focusing on using conventions so that our writing flows smoothly and is easy to read. Students are learning to use correct and effective punctuation, such as commas, full stops, quotation marks, and exclamation marks, to make their writing clear and engaging. We’re encouraging students to reread their work and edit carefully to ensure their ideas are communicated effectively.
Reading
In Reading, we have begun an author study on Jackie French, whose texts connect beautifully to our current inquiry. Students have explored some of her books, including Cyclone and Flood, and have researched her background, learning about her experiences and what inspires her writing. Through this study, we are examining how Jackie French uses real events, emotions, and descriptive language to create engaging and meaningful stories. Students are also beginning to notice the themes, characters, and settings she develops, and are reflecting on how these connect to our inquiry topics. This study is helping students deepen their understanding of how authors communicate ideas and make readers think about the world around them.
Maths
In Mathematics, we have started exploring the exciting world of fractions. Students have enjoyed learning what a fraction is and discovering the many different ways fractions can be represented, including with shapes, numbers, and real-life examples. Through hands-on activities and visual models, they are beginning to understand how fractions show equal parts of a whole and how we can compare and describe them. It’s been wonderful to see the students’ curiosity and enthusiasm as they make connections between fractions and their everyday experiences.
Inquiry
We have begun our final Unit of Inquiry, into Environmental processes can lead to the transformation of the Earth’s surface, under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works. To introduce the unit, students engaged in a provocation activity to explore the new central idea. They experimented with sorting different landforms and making connections, beginning to build their understanding of how the Earth’s surface changes over time.
