Year Three

Dear Grade 3 Families,

We’re now well into the first month of Term 4, and it’s been wonderful to see students settle back into their routines with enthusiasm and focus. This fortnight, students also began their new Unit of Inquiry, “Sharing the Planet: Components of Ecosystems are Interdependent,” exploring how living and non-living things rely on one another to survive. The term is shaping up to be an exciting one, filled with engaging learning experiences and special events as we move toward the end of the school year.

Reading:

In Reading, students recently enjoyed visiting different Year Three classrooms to explore five unique ecosystems. They have also been participating in an author study on Claire Saxby, engaging with her beautifully written stories that showcase Australian landscapes and wildlife. Through shared reading, students have been exposed to rich descriptive and figurative language, while learning about hybrid texts and how authors express their interests, themes, and connections across their work.

Writing

In Writing, students drew inspiration from Claire Saxby’s texts to create their own descriptive writing. They composed detailed paragraphs about ecosystems, focusing on using subject-specific vocabulary and experimenting with nouns, adjectives, and verbs to enhance their writing. To support their writing, students researched the biotic and abiotic features of a variety of ecosystems.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, students have been exploring fractions in depth. They used models and number lines to represent both proper and improper fractions and practiced comparing and ordering fractions, including those with different denominators, with the help of supportive visual tools and hands on manipulatives.

Unit of Inquiry

During Inquiry, students began exploring our new Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme 'Sharing the Planet', with the Central Idea: 'Components of ecosystems are interdependent'. Students have started to investigate how living and non-living elements of ecosystems rely on each other to survive. They have started to learn about food chains, habitats, and the impact of environmental changes on animal and plant life.
