Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,
As we near the middle of term four, the Year Two classes have been kept quite busy with lots of exciting learning and events.
Excursion
The year two students had a fantastic day at the Melbourne Museum and IMAX on Monday the 27th October. Students explored different exhibits in the museum including the Forest Gallery, 600 Million Years and the triceratops exhibition. Students were able to make connections to the learning they have done across the year about different environments and materials that make up our world. Students also view the IMAX movie 'Extreme Weather' which served as a provocation for our upcoming inquiry unit. The film explored bushfires, tornadoes and glacial calving, giving students an up close look at these disasters and their impacts on the environment.
Reading
This week students have been excited to begin reading our new novel 'Storm Boy' by Colin Thiele. Students have been learning lots of background information about the setting of this novel over the past few weeks preparing them to become immersed in the world of this novel. All the Year Two classes will be reading this novel slowly over the coming weeks and exploring the rich text features and descriptive language it holds.
Writing
In writing students have been exploring different ways we can express both facts and opinions. Inspired by the 'Three Little Pigs', students used their knowledge from our inquiry unit to help them justify their choice of material that they would use to build a house. Students have also been applying the knowledge they have gained through reading about the Coorong region to create information texts sharing their knowledge.
Mathematics
In Mathematics students have been exploring different ways of giving and following directions using language such as left, right, forwards and backwards. Students have also explored the concept of turns and have experimented with quarter, half and full turns when giving directions to a friend.
Inquiry
As we reach the end of our inquiry into the central idea, 'properties of materials determine their uses', students have been exploring how we can reuse and recycle different materials to create new useable items. Students have been working hard collecting rubbish that we are using to create our own Ecobricks. An Ecobrick is made by tightly packing an empty soft drink bottle with non biodegradable rubbish to form a strong building 'brick'. We are hoping to use the Ecobricks created by the Year two students to build a friendship bench that will be placed in the school yard.
