Year One

Dear Year One Community,

It is hard to believe we are already halfway through Term 4. Our Year One students have been engaged in a range of rich learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum. Here is an overview of what they have been exploring recently:

Reading

In Reading, students have been focusing on non-fiction texts to strengthen their comprehension skills in preparation for upcoming reading assessments. They have been identifying key information, discussing main ideas, and using text features such as headings, diagrams, and captions to support their understanding of factual information.

Writing

In Writing, students have been developing their understanding of character traits. They have been explicitly learning to describe inside traits (how a character acts and their personality) and outside traits (what can be seen) using descriptive language. This focus supports students in creating more detailed and engaging pieces of writing.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have begun exploring the concept of money. They have been sorting coins in various ways — by colour, number, size, animal, and whether they are dollars or cents. Students have enjoyed hands-on activities such as coin rubbings in their Maths books, using physical materials, and cutting and pasting coin images. They are also beginning to order coins by value, developing a foundational understanding of Australian currency.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students are designing their own unique animals, using creativity and imagination to combine special adaptations that help them survive in their chosen environments. Once their animals are complete, they will bring their ideas to life by creating a triorama that showcases their creature and its habitat.

Learning Auslan with Niina

In Week 3, 1E had a special visit from Niina, a Visiting Teacher from the Department of Education. Niina has been supporting Mrs. Beanland in learning more Auslan and in supporting Hosanna, who has a hearing impairment. During her visit, Niina taught the class about what Auslan is and introduced some common signs that students can use to communicate — including “Good morning,” “How are you?,” the alphabet, and numbers. The students absolutely loved the session, and Hosanna was a fantastic helper!
