For their second clay project, the Grade 5 and 6 students were tasked with creating a ceramic flower or leaf dish. Using raku or terracotta clay, they first rolled the clay out into an approx. 1cm slab and cut around a leaf or flower template.  The students scored lines into their flowers/leaves to make them look more realistic or joined extra details such as stamen or veins with their left-over clay. The slabs were placed in a bowl and curved into shape and left overnight until they turned leather hard. 

                                             

Once dry they were put into the kiln for their first firing where they became bisqueware and are now ready for glazing. The students could choose two colours to glaze their dishes, ensuring they had at least three layers and did not glaze the bottom. The results were truly magnificent and have created a treasured artwork to keep for many years.
