Kingfisher Concert

Last week, we were treated to a magnificent performance by our music students and staff at the Albany Entertainment Centre for the annual Kingfisher Concert. We saw students of all ages perform to a packed house. It was such a good celebration of our culture at Great Southern Grammar: it was inclusive, it was community-minded, it was filled with joy, and it celebrated striving for excellence.

Leaders Retreat

This week has been a big week for our Year Eleven students who have been awarded leadership positions, starting from next term. We had an assembly to announce the leaders to the school last Wednesday and then on Monday afternoon we took the new leadership team for a walk up Castle Rock, to share a special experience and bond as a group, before having dinner together at Due South. Mr Irving spoke to the group about the concept of servant leadership and three different leadership styles: Leading from the front, leading alongside, and leading from behind. We then spent a whole day on Tuesday at UWA for a leadership workshop where our leaders spent a bit more time analysing leadership competencies and knuckling down to their ‘bucket list’ of things that they plan to achieve in their portfolios over the next twelve months. We were also blessed to hear from our guest speaker, Ms Tracey Bridges, CEO of the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who gave her thoughts on leadership.

Year Twelve Exams

This week is a huge week for our Year Twelve students. For many, they are completing their Semester Two examinations, a final step before ATAR examinations next term. For others, it is their last week of school! It's incredible to think that we won't see some of these bright faces after this week until Valedictory next term, but we wish them all the very best and look forward to seeing them again for one last time in Week Two of next term.

Sports Review

This week we welcome Mrs Neesh Flint to the school to help us conduct a review into sport at GSG. We are keen to review what is working well for sport at Great Southern Grammar, what new opportunities we could explore, and what can be improved. Mrs Flint is spending two days at the school this week interviewing staff and students. If parents would like to write feedback on the sports programme under those three headings, please feel free to click HERE and we will make sure it gets to Mrs Flint as part of her review.

Rites of Passage workshop

On Thursday of this week we are also sitting down to have an update on our strategic project to design a Rites of Passage program for our Year Nine students. We have identified a gap in the way we are teaching and then recognising milestones for students in those middle years. There is a long gap between the ‘transition year’ of Year Seven and then other important milestones that happen in Year Eleven and Year Twelve. This is a really exciting project and we plan to have a prototype ready for 2026.

New York Tour

Some of our students and staff depart for New York this week! It is very exciting and I thank the staff for their organisation and our families for their support of this Tour. It is so important for our students to get a worldly perspective during this important stage of development and also to learn those life skills to become independent. This is one of those milestone type moments that I was talking about earlier that is afforded to students in senior years. We wish all our students and staff the very best of luck and we hope they have an amazing, life-changing experience in the Big Apple!

Interschool Orienteering Champions – 2025!

Congratulations to our incredible students for taking home the trophy at the 2025 Interschool Orienteering competition! This achievement is the result of a strategic and passionate investment in Outdoor Education over the past year.

By attending the 2024 event, aligning our Outdoor Education programmes, providing targeted professional development for staff and establishing a full-time orienteering course at GSG, we laid the foundation for success.

These efforts have not only enhanced student skills and confidence but also fostered a culture of resilience and teamwork.

We are proud of our students and staff for embracing the challenge and showing what is possible when preparation meets opportunity. Here is to many more outdoor adventures and victories ahead!
