From the Deputy Principal

Endings and new beginnings

At GSG, and many other schools, this time of year marks the start of many endings and many new beginnings.

Last week we shared the announcement of your new Year Twelve, 2026, leadership group and this morning Mr Jordan Owenell and I shared a breakfast meeting with our incoming School Captains, Audrey Cherry and Charlie Sprigg.  Early next term will mark the moment we share our last breakfast meeting with our 2025 School Captains, Amy Medway and Colin Ferreira.  We shared a Leadership Retreat with our new leaders on Monday evening and on Tuesday, exploring personal values, leadership capabilities and styles, and hearing from Tracey Bridges, CEO of the Albany Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  Tracey left an indelible mark on our students' thinking (a hippopotamus featured in her stories!) and there will, doubtless, be more stories to share.

It's hard to believe our Year Twelves doing ATAR courses are currently sitting their final school exams this week, and many are looking forward to a break before moving on to the final set of ATAR examinations. Meanwhile, our students on VET and General pathways will have their final school day on Friday.  We look forward to recognising them all at our Valedictory Assembly on Friday 24 October.

As we move through these final days for our Year Twelves, the rest of the school is buzzing and busy planning for 2026.  There is a timetable being built (that process started in April!); building works, including a Hall refurbishment, are in the pipeline; holiday maintenance is scheduled; recruitment of staff for next year and strategic projects in Sport, Rites of Passage and Enterprise Initiatives amongst others, continue apace.

It's an exciting time at GSG.  We hold space for our very special Year Twelves as they celebrate their endings and we welcome, with open arms, new beginnings.

What we call the beginning is often the end

And to make and end is to make a beginning.

The end is where we start from.          T.S. Eliot
