LS2 Junior Maths: Clinic 3 – Sharing, Comparing, and Having Fun with Fractions!
This week, our Clinic 3 Junior mathematicians have been exploring the idea that collections can be partitioned into fractions such as halves, quarters, and eighths — and that these fractions can be shared and compared in many different ways!
Using lots of hands-on materials like counters, blocks, and pictures, students have been busy sharing collections equally and discovering what it means to find one half, one quarter, and one eighth of a group. We’ve also been practising making arrays — neat rows and columns — to help visualise our fractions. They loved seeing how the same collection can look very different when it's shared into more (or fewer!) parts.
It’s been wonderful to see so much curiosity and teamwork as students shared, counted, and compared their collections. They’re starting to see that fractions aren’t just numbers — they’re about fair sharing and equal parts!
You can keep the fun going at home by finding everyday ways to talk about fractions:
- Share fruit, toys, or treats and ask, “Is this half, a quarter or an eighth?”
 - Compare portions at dinner time — “Who has more?”
Fold paper or cut sandwiches to see how parts change when you divide them differently.
Our Juniors are doing a fantastic job discovering that maths is everywhere — especially when we share it equally!
Have a lovely weekend!

MUSIC NEWS
Our Junior students have been exploring the exciting world of body percussion, discovering all the different ways we can make music using just our bodies.
From clapping and stomping to snapping and tapping, they’ve participated in guided sessions to build their rhythmic skills. Currently, they’re working in small groups to create and perform their very own body percussion performance.
Meanwhile, our Senior students have been putting their musical minds to work by composing jingles as part of an advertisement project. Working collaboratively in groups,
they’ve been challenged to write catchy and memorable tunes that would grab attention—just like in the real world of media and marketing!
Across both Junior and Senior classes, we’ve also been hard at work rehearsing for our upcoming production of The Wizard of Oz.
It’s all hands-on deck as we polish up the final performances and bring the music of this classic story to life. The students have shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm, and we’re so proud of the progress they’ve made.

SENIOR SPORT
Today, our Basketball Boys Team competed in the Divisional playoffs. They secured the top position at the District Level, which allowed them to advance to the Divisional playoffs. It was a lengthy day characterised by a Round Robin format, during which they played at least four games. They competed hard and lost by 1 goal to the team that won the whole competition. By the end of the day, everyone was fatigued but immensely pleased to have participated. Congratulations to the boys for reaching this level of competition.
Additionally, in a round robin format our Cricket Boys Team participated in the Divisional play offs at Livingston Reserve. They engaged in fair and fierce competition over their four games. The weather was ideal for a cricket match—it was sunny, every kid should be pleased with their performance. I was thrilled with their excellent level of sportsmanship, the boys deserve to be congratulated for making it this far in the competition.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
WHOLE SCHOOL PROGRAMS
SFS AFTER SCHOOL WOOLWORTHIS CRICKET BLAST PROGRAM
What a great time the students had on Wednesday at the Cricket Blast Clinic. Senior students learnt how to bowl and Juniors focussed on throwing and catching.
This program is run by Cricket Victoria and sponsored by Woolworths.
The Program will continue next Wednesday. However, we will have a break in Week 4 which is Production Week. The dates of the remaining clinics are:
Week 3: Wednesday October 22nd
Week 4: NO Cricket Clinics - Production
Week 5: Wednesday November 5th
Week 6 Wednesday November 12th
Registrations are now closed as we have reached full capacity.
Parents are most welcome to attend but will need to be at school to pick up their child by 4.15 pm unless your child is going to After School Care. We can organise students to be dropped off there after the clinics. When leaving the cricket program, please walk around the school on the courts area and ensure you use the pedestrian gate at the front of the school near the rainbow playground.
TERM 4 SWIMMING
Swimming has begun!!
Thanks to all the parents that ensured their child was prepared for their swimming lesson. It made the office ladies job much easier. Thank you also to parents who assisted in the Junior changerooms. Please remember that only the parents I have organised will be allowed to enter and assist in the changerooms.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the Operoo permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home. Next swimming is back to normal for LS2 and 3 Juniors. Please see swimming details below:
Monday – LS1 Seniors and Juniors, LS3 Juniors
Tuesday – LS3 Seniors, LS2 Seniors, LS2 Juniors
Students will need to wear their bathers under their sports uniform and bring a bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. Students will put their thongs on before leaving for swimming to make changing easier. They will then put their shoes back on once they return to school.
Please ensure your child is prepared for their swimming lesson so our office staff do not need to use their valuable time ringing parents and asking them to bring swimming gear.
Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Leisure to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents who have been contacted by me, are able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend a session, they will then remain at school in another Learning Space.

GRADE 5 BIKE EDUCATION – CYCLING SKILLS AND SIMULATIONS
Grade 5 students will begin their Bike Education Program later this term. They will remain on school grounds completing cycling skills and simulations.
All parents will need to give permission and complete your child’s bike and helmet safety check. If you have not given permission, please do so as soon as possible. Also indicate on Operoo if your child does not have a bicycle and helmet. The bike and helmet safety check should have been returned to Home Group teachers on Friday October 17th for students who have their own bike and helmet. If you have not returned it as of yet, could you please return it by Monday.
Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.
