Sustainability

Garden Club
Prep students attended Garden Club this week! The Year 5 and 6 Sustainability Leaders helped them to water the garden and even pull out some weeds.
The students saw our tomato, pea, capsicum and chilli plants which are being grown by the year 3 students in Environmental Education.
Stick Insects
Holidays
If you are interested in and available to look after our three SMPS stick insects over the summer holidays, please email Miss Bec to let her know. We have a ready to go enclosure and will send you info on how to care for them.
Eggs
We have a large amount of spiny leaf stick insect eggs at SMPS, laid by our stick insects.
If you would like to take some eggs to raise, please read the following info and email Miss Bec at rebecca.newman@smps.vic.edu.au to say that you would like some.
- You will need to bring a container to school to collect the eggs.
- Interested families will be given 4 eggs.
- The egg container will need to have holes in it. It will need to be sprayed with water once a week.
- The eggs can take anywhere between 4 and 9 months to hatch.
- Once hatched, you will need a stick insect enclosure (can be purchased online) and to care for the insects by giving them fresh gum leaves to eat weekly and spraying with water daily.
- Here is some info on raising stick insects: Care of Stick Insects - The Australian Museum
- The school will not be able to take back any stick insects later on (as we have some to look after already) so we ask that you be sure before taking the eggs.
