Science week activities
To celebrate science week, Level 5/6 students created bath bombs on Monday. Students chose between lavender and tee tree scents which left the art room smelling very relaxing. This activity was challenging for many students, as it involved the use of careful measurements and a variety of cup and spoon measuring devices. All teams made it through with colourful bath bombs to take home in celebration.
Level 3/4 students also created bath bombs, however all ingredients were premeasured to help with accuracy and the time limit (just 20 minutes!). Our Level 5/6 helpers supported groups to add the correct ingredients, at the right time. Despite the rush, every student went home with a patty pan of bath bomb mixture. Many students were very excited to test out their new creations.
Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students made playdough on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the help of some of our Grade 6 students. Each student had the opportunity to add, mix and create the playdough throughout the activity. The playdough came out soft and in a multitude of colours. We even set up a playdough swapping station, where students could change the colour of their play dough by swapping portions with other students.
Though a little hectic at times, these activities were a great way to acknowledge that science is all around us and show students the unique fun studying chemistry can bring. All students worked co-operatively and displayed kindness and patience, with our 5/6 students taking on leadership roles as they helped the groups share tasks and produce a great result at the end of each activity.
In the science room
Our dragonfly Lavea is still motoring around the fish tank. This week we added some baby guppies which I brought in from my home. The students love seeing such tiny creatures in the tank and will get to see them grow and change as the weeks go on. These creatures also supply students with new and interesting conversations about how animals develop, evolve and how to supply ideal living conditions for living things. Students are also surprised to learn that dragonflies begin their lives emersed in water!
Until next time, remember to act like a proton and stay positive!
