Year 3 & 4 

Inquiry

Our Inquiry unit this term in Year 3 & 4, “Journeys to Australia,” explores the fascinating history of how people came to live in Australia. Students will investigate the journeys of  convicts and their impact on indigenous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will explore the arrival of the First Fleet, and the experiences of convicts, settlers, and migrants. Through stories, videos, and 'hands-on' activities such as diary writing, role plays, and diorama creation, students will develop an understanding of what life was like during these times and how these journeys shaped our nation. They will also explore different perspectives — particularly Indigenous voices — to build empathy and appreciation for Australia’s shared history. The unit will conclude with a class “museum” where students can showcase their learning and creative projects.

Year 3 

Welcome back to Term 4 for our Year 3 Families! 

It’s hard to believe we’ve already reached the final term of Grade 3. Students are diving into an exciting term of learning across all areas, continuing to build their skills and confidence as they prepare for Grade 4. A major highlight will be our Grade 3 Big Day Out at Lady Northcote Camp, where students will spend the day enjoying outdoor challenges, team-building activities, and a taste of camp life. Teachers are also beginning to prepare end-of-year reports to celebrate each student’s progress and achievements. As the term draws to a close, students will have the chance to meet their new 2026 Grade 4 teachers and classmates, which will be an exciting step as they get ready for the next stage of their learning journey.

Literacy

This term, students will deepen their understanding of language, literature, and expression through a focus on Brindabella and texts that explore Australian and Indigenous perspectives. They will discuss characters, settings, and events, making connections between stories and their own experiences. Writing sessions will emphasise emotional language, vocabulary development, and paragraph structure. Students will also explore how texts can be adapted for different audiences, using their Writer’s Notebooks and zines to express their ideas creatively as the year comes to a close.

Maths 

In Term 4, students will explore money, patterns, and chance through hands-on and practical learning tasks. They will represent money in different ways, calculate change, and solve real-life financial problems using number sentences. Students will also conduct chance experiments, record results, and discuss probability using language like ‘likely’ and ‘impossible’. Toward the end of the term, they’ll investigate number patterns through doubling, halving, and identifying multiples, while revising key concepts such as fractions, time, and measurement.

Year 4 

It’s hard to believe we’re already in the final term of Grade 4! Over the coming weeks, students will be busy completing their final units of work, reflecting on their learning, and preparing for their transition into Grade 5. We’re all looking forward to our exciting camp to Sovereign Hill in December, where students will experience life in the 1850s goldfields. Teachers are beginning to write end-of-year reports to celebrate each student’s progress and achievements. Toward the end of term, students will have the chance to meet their new 2026 Grade 5 teachers and classmates — an exciting step as they get ready for the next chapter of their learning journey.

English

In Literacy, students will engage in a novel study of the text, Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. This novel is set in the Coorong region of South Australia and focuses on a boy's friendship with a pelican named Mr. Percival. The story explores themes of loneliness, family, race relations, and ecology, weaving these deep subjects into the tale of the boy, his father, and their Aboriginal friend, Fingerbone Bill. 

Through this novel study, students will compare how texts from different times, with similar purposes and audiences, depict ideas or events.

A key focus of the unit is vocabulary development. Students will encounter and learn new words in context, expanding their language and understanding of nuanced expressions. These vocabulary activities are designed to enrich their reading experience and support their writing skills.

Students will also work on grammar through sentence level lessons. They will expand their vocabulary by exploring a range of synonyms and antonyms, and using words encountered in a range of sources including the mentor text. Student will also create informative texts, written and spoken, using relevant, linked ideas for a range of audiences and using multimodal elements.

Through our spelling program (Spelling Mastery), students will continue to build on their knowledge of spelling patterns and generalisations, as well as strategies to make plausible attempts to spell words, using syllables and morphemic knowledge.

Students will continue to read different types of texts, integrating phonic, semantic and grammatical knowledge to read accurately and fluently for meaning, re-reading and self-correcting when needed. 

Maths

In Number and Algebra, students will follow and create algorithms involving a sequence of steps that use addition or multiplication to generate sets of numbers. They will identify and describe any emerging patterns.

Students will then review and revise the mathematical concepts taught throughout the year.

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics, Probability), students will use scaled and digital instruments to measure and compare capacities using appropriate units. They will explain and compare the geometric properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students will represent and approximate composite shapes and objects in the environment, using combinations of familiar shapes and objects. They will also recognise line and rotational symmetry of shapes and create symmetrical patterns and pictures, using dynamic geometry software where appropriate.
