Year 1/2 

Overview of Learning

It’s hard to believe we’ve reached the final term of the year! Term Four will be full of exciting learning experiences, as we explore the topics of the past and how life has changed over time. It is a busy and exciting term, filled with opportunities for students to consolidate their learning and celebrate achievements. We also have some special events to look forward to, including our upcoming Rippon Lea excursion and End of Year Celebrations. 

As the weather warms up, please remember that hats are required for all outdoor activities. We encourage students to bring a labelled hat each day and stay Sun Smart while enjoying time outside.  In keeping with this policy, our Whole School Assemblies will now be held on Monday mornings at 9:05am. 

If your family is going on holiday or your child has repeat weekly appointments - please add these details to Compass and communicate this to your child's classroom teacher/s.

English

In Reading and Viewing, students will continue to work through the Little Learners Love Literacy sequence, building skills in phonics and morphology to support reading, writing and spelling development. They are focusing on recognising letter-sound patterns, blending sounds to read unfamiliar words and segmenting words to spell them.  Students are revising reading and writing words with common digraphs (e.g. sh, ch, th, and wh) and learning vowel digraphs (e.g. oi, ow and oo). They will be reading historical fiction to compare life of long ago to now, and to support children to write their own narrative.  Regular reading at home is an important aspect to support your child's learning. 

In Writing, students will use their historical understandings to inspire their own narratives, writing from the perspective of a child living in 1800s Australia. We'll be focusing on expanding sentences by adding adjectives/adverbs and extra information (e.g. where, when and why). They will continue to work through all the phases of the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing). 

In Speaking and Listening, students will further develop their confidence to share ideas and listen respectfully to others. They will practise sharing information in short presentations in a clear voice, take turns in conversations and respond to questions providing more detail. During class discussions and group activities, students will practise using new vocabulary and building on others’ ideas. You can support this at home by encouraging your child to talk about their day, explain their thinking and listen carefully when others are speaking.

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students in Year 1/2 will be developing their skills across a range of engaging topics. They will explore money, learning to recognise coins and notes, count collections and solve simple transactions. Students will also be building their problem-solving strategies, applying their knowledge in real-life situations. Throughout the term, students will continue to practise and extend their understanding of all four processes: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, through hands-on activities, games and problem solving. 

In Applied Mathematics (Term 4 focus on Statistics and Measurement - Time), students will be learning to collect and represent data about categories, such as favourite fruits or pets. They will record data using tally marks and use one-to-one displays (like picture graphs) to show their results. Students will  compare findings and discuss what the data tells them. They will explore the language of time and connect it to their daily routines. Through hands-on activities and digital tools, students will estimate and measure the duration of tasks.  

Inquiry - "Then & Now"

Our Grade 1/2 students will be exploring what life was like in the past and how it has changed over time. They will compare toys, transport, schools, homes and daily life, then and now. Students will investigate old photographs, stories and artefacts to help them understand how people lived long ago and reflect on how technology has impacted our lives. 

As part of this unit, we will also be going on an exciting excursion to Rippon Lea Estate, where students will experience an historic home and its gardens first-hand. This unit will encourage curiosity, questioning, and making connections between the past and our lives today.
