Book Week - Book an Adventure!
Book Week runs from next Monday 18 to Friday 23 August and the Middle School Library has lots of activities and quizzes planned.
On Wednesday 20 August we invite students to dress up as their favourite book character or to express the theme - ‘Book an Adventure’. Students can also bring a gold coin donation for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Focus on Reading
Our Term 3 Library focus is on ‘adventure reading’ to complement the Book Week theme. Students have been participating in our Reading Quest with a total of 90 individual challenges completed so far - keep up the good work!
Middle School Showcase
Thursday 21 August | The Farrall Centre
Join our Middle School musicians as they perform for us in our Middle School music ensembles: Intermediate Band, Middle School Combo, Year 7 Marimba, Year 8 Marimba, Middle School Chamber Strings and Middle School Vocal Ensemble. This event begins at 6:00pm and should conclude by 7:15pm.
All are welcome and entry is free.
Swimming Carnival
Friday 15 August
The Year 7 to 12 Swimming Carnival will be held at the Hobart Aquatic Centre on Friday 15 August from 8.35am to 3pm (please note earlier finish time). Students should wear their sports uniform and have packed swimmers, towel, goggles and a swim cap. Students are encouraged to accessorise their uniform with their House colours.
Students are to make their own way to the Aquatics Centre and sign-in at the table set up near the 50 metre pool. Students should then report to their House area.
Should students be unable to swim, they are encouraged to help out with service on the day. If a student is unwell, please contact the Middle School or Senior School office by phone or email.
All students must attend for the entire day. Any appointments must be notified the day before to the Middle or Senior School offices. Students will be dismissed from the Aquatic Centre at 3pm and will need to make their own travel arrangements home. Please be aware that traffic around the Aquatic Centre can be quite congested at this time. Arrangements have been made for students travelling on country buses.
We encourage students to enter lots of events and enjoy being part of their House events as part of the larger Year 7 to 12 groups.
A program of events can be accessed here: 2025 Aquatics Carnival program of Events. Parents are warmly invited to attend. The parking at the Aquatic centre is limited to 3 hours and the overflow parking area at the regatta showground will be open for the day from 8am.
ACER Wellbeing Survey
The Friends’ School is using the ACER Wellbeing survey to help us understand and support the wellbeing of our students.
The ACER Wellbeing Survey is a comprehensive assessment tool that helps schools gather information about students' social and emotional wellbeing. For students in Years 7 and 8, this is particularly important as they navigate the transition to secondary school and early adolescence. The survey is confidential and covers key aspects of your child’s wellbeing, including academic engagement, social relationships, physical health, emotional regulation and self-perception. The information gathered identifies areas where our students are thriving and where they may need additional support, often delivered through our social-emotional learning program.
Students in Years 7 and 8 will complete the ACER Wellbeing survey in Weeks 5 and 6 this Term. Students in Year 7 will complete the survey on Tuesday 26 August during their Humanities classes, while students in Year 8 will complete their surveys during Connections on Friday 22 August.
We ask that parents discuss the upcoming survey with their children and encourage them to help us create a more supportive and positive school environment by thoroughly engaging in this process. Their responses are anonymous, and rather than giving us an insight into how each child is travelling individually, they provide us with valuable trends and patterns across our year groups. If any of the topics raised in the survey questions are triggering for students, they are encouraged to reach out to their Key Teacher, our pastoral care team or their trusted adults.
Absentees
If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Middle School Office (phone: 6210 2235, or email: middleschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au). We appreciate your support in this process.
