Learning, growing and celebrating together...
Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,
Term Three was once referred to as ‘the term with the least amount on’. That phrase doesn’t really apply here at our school. As always, there is ‘just a bit’ going on at Sacred Heart Kew. Here’s a ‘very brief’ snapshot of just what has been happening lately across the school.
Our Prep children have finally celebrated being ‘100 days older - 100 days brighter ’ at school. This milestone then led to our very clever Preps presenting their very first Spotlight on Learning at Assembly last week, which was both brave and informative. All our Prep children very confidently showed us all just how much they had learnt and grown since the start of the year.
Our Year One children continue to work on their reading and spelling, focussing on the Narrative writing genre this term. The Year One children have been getting to know their new teacher (Miss Burke) and Miss Burke has been getting to know her new Year one children. New relationships with a bit of fun and learning on the side. Later this term they will also delve into the past with their olden days experience.
Our Year Two children presented to the whole school a special Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Paraliturgy last Friday for Australia’s first and only Saint. This term they will explore the wonder of water and study the beautiful story of ‘Fox’ by Margaret Wild. Today our Year Two children are participating in their ‘Year Two Experience’, visiting (and navigating) their way through Activate in Moorabin and then enjoying a viewing of Disney Frozen 2 at Balwyn Cinemas.
All our Prep - Year Two children also recently participated in an exciting art incursion with Melbourne-based contemporary artist Dawn Tan. Inspired by her food-themed illustrations, students drew and painted their favourite meals inspired by Dawn’s unique approach to drawing and painting.
Our Year Three children have already been out to Twisted Science, participated in their Soccer Gala day and a bit of Hoop Time, as well as continuing to extend place value ideas to 10,000 and beyond. This term our Year Three children will enter the world of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ by E.B White (one of my old time favourite books).
Our Year Four children have prepared and celebrated their First Eucharist (another important step along their faith journey). These children also participate in a Soccer Gala day and Hoop Time, along with being introduced to ‘The Wild Robot’ (Roz) by Peter Brown.
Our Senior children have once again shown ‘quite a few’ prospective families around and through our amazing school. These children will continue to prepare and participate in the APSMO Maths Olympiad and Maths Games competitions and also read ‘Tom Appleby: Convict Boy’ by Jackie French in their novel studies this term.
Our Staff, amongst teaching duties and responsibilities, have also begun ‘after work workshops’, creating costumes, props and scenes for Disney Frozen Jr. We have also begun planning for the relocation of our Year 3 - 6 classes back over to the School Hall Building (for Term Four), as well as working with our MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) Finance Business Partner to plan and budget for the 2026 school year.
Next week, I will be away with my Principal Network (East Central Zone) colleagues as we join other School Principals’ and educators across Australia at the National Catholic Education Conference (NCEC) in Cairns. The theme for the Conference is ‘hope, anchored in faith’. The conference will focus on the strategic vision and mission of Catholic education across three key areas – Faith, Excellence and Access. I look forward to connecting with my colleagues as we listen to a broad range of speakers, presentations and workshops focused on Catholic identity, mission and formation; learning and teaching; leadership and governance; parent engagement; parish and community engagement; resourcing and infrastructure; advocacy and marketing. I am sure it will be a valuable experience and I am most grateful for the opportunity to attend this experience with my colleagues. I look forward to seeing everyone again on Monday 25 August.
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend and week ahead.
Kind Regards,
Ed Weekes
School Principal
