SENIOR HOOP TIME
On Monday 11th August we had four basketball teams participate in the Heidelberg District Senior Hoop Time competition. Teams were made up of a combination of Grade 5 and 6 students. We entered teams into the All Star Girls, All Star Boys, Future Stars (mixed) and Rookie divisions.
Thank you to Toby Barker and Chris Chan for coaching the All Star Girls and All Star Boys teams. I would also like to thank the parents who came to support Heidelberg teams and for also helping out with scoring on the day too.
As always, our district was very strong and all of our teams were competitive and only just missed out on playing in the grand final. The All Star Girls division was very close and although they finished 4th, the games they lost were by margins 4 or less. Chances were there to win those games however sport can be cruel and unfortunately the shots that would normally go in just didn’t seem to stick.
The All Star Boys competition was tough. The boys took a game to warm up losing to the eventual winners RGL in the opening game by 5 points. Our boys team got better however so did the other teams. A big loss to St Martin of Tours in the 3rd game had the boys feeling a bit low however they got themselves up and about for the next and won. The boys eventually finished 4th.
The Future Stars started well in all of their games and got ahead. However in game 2 against RGL, lapses in concentration during the 2nd half allowed RGL to level and get ahead by 2 points with a minute and a half to go. Although having most of the possession during that time the team couldn’t hit the shots needed. The team lost by 2 points. In the 4th game against Viewbank, the only unbeaten team we got ahead by 8 points and finished the half strong. The team knew they needed the win to ensure a finals place however Viewbank made some personal changes who were very skilled, and these boys intercepted some soft passes to get Viewbank ahead. After this loss we went into the final game knowing the grand final was gone, so the team went into the final game to just have some fun, with no pressure of the final. Nearly everyone scored and some even managed to shoot 3s in the game. The Future Stars finished 4th.
The rookies didn’t have a ladder, it was day of immersion of basketball and participation. I apologise for not having a photo. The team had a fantastic day with a few wins on the board.
