This term our STEM classrooms have been buzzing with excitement! Students across all year levels have been exploring, experimenting, and creating. Here’s a snapshot of how our projects are going so far:
Foundation
Foundation students have been busy learning all about the ocean and its habitats. They have been working on their mini ocean boxes and have enjoyed diving into this exciting project in the final two weeks of term. Along the way, they have also completed science experiments on crystallisation, learning some of the basic concepts of how crystals form.
In addition, they’ve been developing their early coding and problem solving skills while navigating Bee-Bots, an engaging way to learn about sequencing and directions!
Years 1 & 2
Students in Years 1 and 2 have been discovering how to care for the ocean and its creatures while investigating their amazing adaptations. From fast-swimming fish to camouflaged sea animals, they’ve explored how living things survive in their environments. The highlight of the term has been designing their own marine creatures using recycled materials – and the results have been both imaginative and sustainable, showing creativity and environmental awareness.
Years 3 & 4
For Years 3 and 4, the big challenge has been designing and testing balloon powered cars to learn about forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion. Not every car worked as planned, but this provided valuable opportunities to learn how scientists and engineers improve their designs. Students have been gathering data, running trials, and making plans for improvement, discovering that sometimes the best learning comes from testing and trying again.
Years 5 & 6
Our senior students have been working on combining digital technologies and sustainability. They’ve been exploring how to design wearable technology that can keep people safe, brainstorming creative ideas and prototypes. At the same time, they’ve been investigating the environmental impact of fast fashion and experimenting with upcycling old clothes, giving them new life. From creative designs to thoughtful solutions, students are showing innovation and responsibility toward building a sustainable future. It’s been an exciting term of STEM learning. Students have shown perseverance, creativity, and problem-solving skills – even when things didn’t always go to plan! The students enjoyed finishing off the term with some amazing final projects and celebrating all of their hard work.
