Governing Council Learning Update report

Learning Update from each area across the school
Pre School

Glenn the Junk man inspired new ways of thinking about learning - pocket information books!

Did you see the clouds move really fast last week? We laid in the sandpit and watched how quickly the clouds moved between the shed and our shade sail.

Early Years (Rooms 6,7 and 8)

Rm 8-In Room 8 we have been writing Narrative and persuasive texts. Our focus has been on the features of these genres and also adding some punctuation eg. fullstops, capital letters and question marks.

Room 7: In literacy, we’ve been having lots of fun learning the sounds that letters make and using them to build and read simple words. We’ve also been practising how to write our letters. In maths, we’ve been working on our numbers, counting forwards and backwards to 20, and exploring how numbers can be split into two parts, starting with combinations that make 10. In science, we’ve especially loved growing our beans. It’s been exciting to watch them change and grow each week!

Primary Years (Rooms 9, 11, 12

Room 9 - We have enjoyed the days when we could go into our school garden.  We are germinating flower seeds, which will be planted in the garden beds, and some will come up to room 9, where we can watch them grow! In mathematics, we have been learning about angles and time.

Room 11 - In English students have been learning how to build suspense in narrative writing to create more interesting stories. In maths we have been focusing on building up the foundational number skills like place value, number sense, and addition/subtraction. Additionally, students have really enjoyed learning biology in science through exploring the many adaptations that animals/plants use to survive.

Room 12: In English students have been writing a Cautionary Tale (a type of narrative) which we will showcase at the next assembly. In mathematics, students have enjoyed learning about prime numbers, square numbers, rounding, estimation, factors and multiples.

Primary Special Class

The two students from the special class are making positive connections with their peers in room 9. Joining the two rooms is working well.

We included students from across the school to join us on an excursion sponsored by The Variety Children's Charity to see a movie at the Regal Theatre, all students had a great experience.

Specialists

PE

R-4: Students have been enjoying practising and refining the fundamental movement skills in circuits. Year 4-6 students have enjoyed learning how to play netball and athletics. We are in the process of collecting data for SAPSASA Athletics (long jump, high jump, discus, shotput and running events 100m, 200m & 800m) as well as Cross Country.

Technologies

R/1 students have been learning about where their food comes from.

Yr 4-6 students have been working on idea generation and starting circuit building using Makey Makeys.
