The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide  celebration that occurs annually on the 14th March. The theme for 2026 was Mathematics and Hope. The International Mathematical Union invited everyone to consider: "Hope is the most universal of all human possessions," Thales of Miletus (an ancient Greek philosopher). More than 2,500 years later, we can also say that mathematics is one of the most universal human possessions. Mathematics gives us hope to understand reality and truth clearly, share common definitions, learn cooperation, use data responsibly, find win-win strategies, and more.

There were over 967 events organised worldwide to explore this theme. Ocean Grove Primary school celebrated the International Day of Mathematics last Friday in a variety of ways.

Our Foundations students had great fun measuring items in their classrooms with unifx blocks as informal units.

The Year 3s demonstrated wonderful creativity as they practised creating examples of rotation (turn), translation (slide) and reflection (flip) with 2D shapes.

Across the rest of our school, students explored ‘teen’ and ‘ty’ numbers (such as fourteen and forty), added and converted fractions, and extended their understanding of addition and subtraction to complete algebraic problem solving!
